What's the point of concealing URLs when selling sites?

There seems to be more and more auctions which state 'PM me for URL'. This is a good tactic because it means your thread gets bumped a bunch of times by people requesting the site URL by PM - this therefore puts the sites which are completely upfront and provide the URL, at a disadvantage as they get knocked off the front page a lot quicker.

I'd also say that the main motivation behind this, would be to prevent people from having their site copied. However, if anyone was serious about copying people's websites, they would simply request a PM just like everyone else, so it's not effective in the slightest.

So it seems like it's unfair, encouraging spamming and for no valid reason. Can we not make it a rule that all sites for sale must have a link to the site their selling?

Google can penalize you if they find that you're selling links/posts or whatever it is on your site. That's the main reason I think.

I'm not talking about links, I'm talking about people concealing the URL of the site which they're selling.

If I was a jealous competitor, I would post and get you to PM me your link? Do you really think because you're sending the link via PM, it's not going to fall in the wrong hands?

Many buyers don't want the sale of the site archived.

Yepp agreed with Rob there, also sometimes there can be sites which dont want to inform people that they are actually changing ownership and stuff. Dont know how ethical/unethical that is, but that's how it is.

I think Rob has hit the nail on the head. I've sold a few sites where people have come back to me and said, I'm not paying $X when you only bought the site for $Y last month. I've also found a lot of people selling links / ad spots for 1 Year up front and then selling their blog after a few months. There are many reasons people don't divulge the URL.

Speaking of selling sites. Does anyone know if there are any plans to split it up into WTB / WTS sub forums? There are more WTB threads then WTS threads sometimes. Maybe a fixed price sub section and auction sub section also then the people selling at a fixed price don't disappear down the pages below all the threads getting bumped with $2 bids.

Or open photoshop and do it manually...it takes five seconds.

But you asked "why?"...so we're telling you.

We're not going to change anything right now so...I'm going to close this thread.
