Hi, I have an offer to write an Ebook about real estate in the USA. The client would like the book to be between 20,000 to 30,000 words long. What should I charge for this? This is for a long term client of mine who I usually charge $10 per 500 word article.
Ok, anyone have a ballpark figure? Like I said, I already do articles on real estate for this client at $10 per 500 word article.... so what should I charge for a book that will be 20k-30k words?
ITs also depends on the how much pages u want to create on the ebook so charge according to the per word or per page
rsrikanth05 is right, because if you charge a lot of money the buyer will not tend to buy again from you.
IF this will take you a long time then go $150-200, if you will be able to just blow through this then go $100-150.
lol Those telling you to charge extremely low rates are just generally the ones who don't know how to market themselves effectively at higher ones. Charge what you know your time is worth, factoring in the quality you can provide. People are more than happy to keep coming back to you at higher rates if you give them what they want. E-books can run from the hundreds into the thousands depending on how much research is involved, length, etc. Since you already have a base rate with the client, you simply need to decide if you're happy working from that for a project that would be a larger time commitment. If it's much more work than what they usually order at once (as in they tend to order a few articles at once instead of in bulk), you may want to discount your rate slightly - I wouldn't too much though (not less than $7-8 / 500 words based on your article rate - or $280 - 480). That rate is more than fair for a client used to paying you $10 / 500 words for smaller projects - a 20-30% savings for them. There's absolutely no excuse for you to take this scope of a project for only $150 or less just because others think cheap is better. You set your rates where they are for a reason. Never compromise yourself into a lousy gig by offering too big of a discount... they can either afford you or they can't.
If you are already charging him $10 for 500-word documents, why don't you just keep doing that, but just multiply it by 40 to get, say, a 20,000-word document?
Thank God, the voice of reason. If you go by the rates posted in the Writer's Market, it would cost the client even more.
Charge them a round about $450 if its a good article. Remember, content matters so if its really of good content and the buyer realizes that he or she will come back even if its of a higher price. Cheerios!
Listen to jhmattern... Writing an ebook is no easy task and can take many hours and a lot of hard work. No way should you charge less for doing more work; that is doing yourself an injustice. You should charge accordingly, somewhere between 75% and 100% of your current rate.
Ok thanks for the info everyone. I was already thinking along the lines of what you said Jhmatterm, so I'll probably give them a price of $8 per 500 words.
