Joomla vs. Drupal

I am trying to decide whether to use Joomla or Drupal to build a CMS that I want to apply SEO techniques to. I also have a good knowledge of HTML and CSS but that is about it. Which package should I choose and do you have any tips for me?

Based on my experience, I only use Joomla for a day.. and Drupal? For a year

 

The moment SEO comes into picture for your requirement, it's always DRUPAL.
Joomla may do better with 3rd party SEO components, but personally I find DRUPAL much more good by default in SEO.

So obviously SEO is very important, but which one is more expandable? Which one can you do the most with, easiest to modify, etc?

 

Joomla 1.5 is the best. Its really a CMS. what features dont have joomla?

DRUPAL has a huge learning curve and not easy to modify, but you can almost do anything with DRUPAL.

And it's not easy to find themes for DRUPAL unlike JOOMLA

If you are a tech savvy, you should go for DRUPAL.
If you want to make websites on the fly, you may go for JOOMLA.

So chances are you'd need a custom designer then, huh? For Drupal, that is. I'll have to check it out.

 

It is really impossible to answer to question unless you describe what you are trying to accomplish. There are several aspects that differentiate CMS products:

1) Versatility
2) Maintainability
3) Ease of development
4) Ease of upgrading
5) Security
6) Reliability
7) Support availability(from community and consultants)
8) Support and maintenance costs
9) Viability
10) Ease of learning (administration, users, technical support)

If one CMS is best in one category, such as Versatility (MODx, Drupal), they may be terrible in other categories (ease of learning, maintainability, support/maintenance costs).

Some CMSs may come with a module that does exactly what you want, and that may save you some substantial costs. However, it may come at the cost of reliability, upgrade paths (Joomla is terrible at this), etc.

So, without being specific, your question is impossible to answer in a reasonable matter. I have been look at CMS products now for several weeks, and they all have substantial pros and cons, in each category. Lots of it is very subjective.

hmm, You would think that if Drupal was the best solution Vs. joomla that the U.S. Department of Defense would have chosen it as their CMS backbone. However, they didn't, The U.S. Department of Defense uses Joomla - I suppose it can't be all that bad

Both CMS's can be Optimized, Joomla however still currently holds the record for having more plug-ins / mods / components than any other opensource CMS along with a High regarded Dev / Support Team.

It's my opinion that Joomla is the best option between the 2.

Just my 2 cents.

I've been using Joomla for almost a year now - but I'll try to have a look at Drupal one of these days.

SEO friendly? - Joomla 1.5 is design to be SEO friend than 1.1.xx.

 

but drupal is more seo friendly out of the box. I will go for drupal.

And it seems that joomla need to much server resources so... Drupal !

 

i installed all my sites using joomla. been using it for a year or so.. but a few things you need to know about it:

1. xHTML validation: really sux, as more modules you install and appear in your page, the more error u will get

2. fantastic templates

3. extensions.joomla.org has loads of addons u can use

4. 1.5 looks much better?

5. SEO: depends on the tools that you use to help you 'boost' your ratings
