I know this has been asked before but I can't seem to find the answer that helps for me.
After I edit the config file I keep getting the error

    Error establishing a database connection

I have renamed it, I've checked the password and login and I believe that database is correct but I don't know since I cant figure this out. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Do you have a cpanel web hosting account? If so, you should try installing through Fantastico to make it easier.

Hard to tell you what your problem would be other than the username, password, and database name.

I agree with PHPGator. Use Fantastico to install Wordpress automatically. It's a little hard to install Wordpress manually for a first timer.

Also, if you tried to install it once, then changed the config and went back again, the install gets confused with the first one. If you go in and delete the database, then try to install again, it usually works.

***This is assuming, though, this is a new install and not using an established database. Do not delete your database if you are just trying to move servers.

Assuming your wp-config.php fle name, database name, username, and password are all correct (and in the correct location), try changng your database host from "localhost" to the IP address your database is assigned to. I have to do that with my current hosting provider in order for WordPress to connect.

Furthermore, is the wp-config.php file in the directory WordPress was installed to?

this error doesn't appear only on first installing it may appear even after.
you just have to email your hosting company sometimes its there sql server problem too even if you have configured your wp-config.php file right
