yeah you need to have a lot of friends on the 2 main ones, stumble upon and digg. what you want to do, but most people won't tell you is to get on the first page, for this tou will need 65+ votes within a short amount fo time from the first vote It's good to get friends on these, you vote for their sites, they vote for yours, etc
It helps in SEO as SE just love these sites.. you can get indexed within minutes and ranked within hours!!
WEB 2.0 is now evolved now a days... some webmasters said that SMO has the power to double your Traffic. But it depends on how you apply it.
smo is better to get massive traffic for your site and also help you to get better seo, but all depend upon how you allpy it and in how many sites you are doing this .
Social Media sites will only give you a short-term blip in low-quality traffic unless you are really offering good content. If you offer good content you will get RSS subscribers, bookmarks and backlinks via re-posts.
If the effect is getting a spike in attention and traffic, as long as your site is interesting and useful, you will have a good % of the traffic bookmarking your site or joining your list and returning later to see what you have going on. It is all about the stickiness of your site.
SEO and SMM are seperate disciplines, tho there is cross-over... had this discussion a lot this year which produced; the Value of Social Media Marketing (issues and musings) the Value of SMM Part II (interview with 6 SMM pros) ..in the end it is more a branding/authority building excercise that is not simply link spamming social spaces... 2c
Social Media sites just give a temporary(in most cases) boost in traffic. But this traffic will not help much in increase earning from adsense or other ads. This traffic do not convert.
Is there any step by step guide on how to plan SMO and how to apply? is it good for a company which provides services those are not changeable very frequently?

While the conventional sources are long term goal, is it good to spend time on SMO for short term goals? Also a traffic from SMO is a question, Is it a traffic from customers or from people seeking customers.

What is important is to understand the differences in goal setting and benchmarking for SMM over SEO.. they are distinctly different disciplines
IMO it is too difficult to break even unless you have backing from a venture capitalist. The server cost for video sites are outrageous!! Couple that with the fact that it is very hard to make money from them, and it is one of the most risky startups.
