Yeah :D If I remember correctly, Yahoo did launch the similar "PR" thing. I'm not sure what the name is, may be "siterank" or something but Yahoo launched it too late and no people use it as an indicator. This is a sign that Yahoo always fallen off behind Google. PR is something that simple but Yahoo never thought about it or serious about it until Google market them and we (internet marketer) are the victim of their marketing. :p

Even PR is not an only one or main factor of Google ranking but internet marketer always gone crazy when PR update  PR is easy for people to use as draft indicator and they always "woo" "wahh" when their PR increased or "Sh.." "fu.." when their PR decreased. I am even see some people here hate Google seriously because their PR was down :D

I wonder why Yahoo never created any innovative idea before Google makes it while Google always does it before Yahoo (and MSN and ... and .. etc.) with their big budget and manpower they can do it but why don't?

Google is a big player and I think will remain so for several years from now on. Of course, everything changes in life and everything is relative in the human history. But I think we should enjoy Google like we did until now - thanks to Google I've become a better webmaster - I guess :D

If your advice has been followed by yahoo then surely google was not a name we would ever be discussing here.

Impossible, Google will not fail. I am seeing G from last four year and this view was of a SEO and webmaster. I am always seeing them changing their algo. On the other hand if I consider my view of G from last 8 years as an user then also I will appreciate them. So I can't say that Google will fail on some day.

Google has a lot of human capital and it will be hard for a newcomer to jump their shark.

I don't think google would fail. Not everyone does online marketing and such, many just use the internet and search google because they think it's the best search engine out their.

Against whom google will fail? Against other search engines.. what there principle of ranking is for other search engines? Its only backlinks and relevant backlinks. This is not a proper to say for google.

I couldn't see Google failing severely.

The most I can imagine, is that a competitor will take an equal share of the market. And I think it could be done with perfect timing, and if Google makes a few laughable mistakes.

It would probably require a form of negative advertising, where the ad made people laugh at a few of Google's search results, where the results were rediculous.

I think one user who posted earlier, had it right that many people who use Google, lack internet and website knowleddge, but rely on Google like a brand name.

All it would take is a dynamic and effective ad to do the job. But perfect times, a few genuine rediculous small mistakes, and very likely a catchy tune.

Fortunatly for us webmasters... Google, MSN and Yahoo will remain the top three search engines for a long time coming, it is going to take something big to knock those three off their mantles.

When I first started Google were commonly used for search and MSN/Yahoo were used for their applications like Yahoo Mail and their news sections hyped together with the messengers, etc. This was thrown together with a semi-decent search engine built into their websites. There was no GMail when I first started out.

Since then the tables have turned, Google started to look into other corners of the market as their search was so strong but application were weak, and MSN & Yahoo both released search algorythms to try and combat Google for the top spot. Google now have a host of good applications now to rival that of Yahoo and MSN and in return MSN/Yahoo have an algorythm in place to rival that of the others. Basically that is what it is like in business, you do what your major competitors do, and then better them... Its the way of the world.

These three companies keep mirroring everything that the other does, Google released pagerank, Yahoo release webrank, or whatever it was called, Google have Googlebot, Yahoo have yahooslurp, Adsense/YSM/Adcenter, etc, etc. Well, you can see where I am going with this.

You may see some changes in the way or amount of searches you get from these three search engines, and sure, one may eventually take over from Google a good while from now, but it sure wont be the end of Google as we know it. Between the three of them they are keeping each other going as they are and will remain the top three daddies in search technology, and the competition between them can only be healthy because it makes the eager to better their brands, hence keeping their users happy, hence strengthening their position as the top three engines to use.

With these three engines in place, webusers have everything that they need to conduct a search for the exact information or items that they have at their disposal. They will remain for a long time with the other slightly lesser engines like Ask Jeeves, AOL (who use Google technology) and a host of other good resources, most who also use Google Technology. The fact that this is so tells you something about the Algorythm that Google have.

About three or so years ago I remember a debate about who would eventually rival Google, and for its pure algorythm a lot of people suggested Ask Jeeves, but even they couldn't compete with the bigger names. They still remain a big name, but have never inched nearer to Google, MSN or Yahoo in terms of users by a long-shot.

Also, a lot of people here in the UK was hyping up Mirago, who had many users and was ahead in the PPC industry around the time Yahoo Search Marketing was Overture, but it seems in my time they have had a decrease in users who most probably opted to swap to one of the big guns to conduct their searches.

My opinion, Google will be top dog for a long time yet, it will be very hard to knock them off top spot for search technology.

Just my penny for my thoughts :p

So you are saying that because *some* people buy links, Google will fail. That is ridiculous and totally naive. Purchased links are spam, and G has absolutely the best spam detection methods that money can buy. Does that mean that G can find every spam link? No. It does mean G can find an extraordinarily high percent of spam links. And it is done algorithmically, most likely by a neural net which learns on its own getting better and better over time.

G has some of the brightest minds in the industry engineering methods to improve detection of relevancy versus detection of spam. Yes, one day G will collapse. Eventually your prediction will come true. Every great empire known to man has eventually collapsed. But I wouldn't short the stock expecting that day to come anytime soon and it certainly won't be because some people are blogging for a fee. :)

AOL was once the search leader in the business, then came Yahoo, after Yahoo came Google all in a span of 13 years, I think google will get over taken, just longer then it took Yahoo and AOL

don' forget, google beats yahoo by fulltext search, was a new thing for yahoo classified index.
one days, google will be beaten by a new thing, maybe smart voice/artificial intelligence search and just deliver you result from multiple source.
