10 things you should know about John McCain

Discussion in 'Politics & Religion' started by ziya, May 3, 2008.

  1. #1
    1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he's continued to oppose key civil rights laws.
    2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain "will make Cheney look like Gandhi."
    3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.
    4. McCain opposes a woman's right to choose. He said, "I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned."
    5. The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.
    6. He's one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.
    7. Many of McCain's fellow Republican senators say he's too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He's erratic. He's hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."
    8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.
    9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion." McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult."
    10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.

I found above list from http://pol.moveon.org/mccain10/email.html?rc=homepage . But not sure are they right or not right

The definition of civil rights from a modern liberal perspective is nonsense. It is welfare socialism. In this regard, McCain is a conservative of principle and I agree with him. Enough with all of the damn holidays. I would hope he would vote against a holiday for Reagan, Eisenhower or anyone else.

By all accounts, this seems to be accurate. McCain is an overt super hawk, Clinton is a closet super hawk.

McCain is totally pro-torture. He knows it works from when he was tortured in Vietnam, and did radio ads for the Viet Cong, earning the nickname, "songbird McCain".

Unfortunately. I am 95% sure that McCain will win the election. The America that I know will never vote for a woman or a black. This will be a race between an old, tired and out of breath horse and a horse which only has 2 legs, and we can guess which horse will win. :(

    I hope, I am wrong.

I'm still willing to give McCain the benefit of the doubt on his POW status until something more substantial comes forward.

He exaggerates on his entire POW story. He acts like he was one of a handful of people, when there were over 600 in his position. He also wasn't tortured the entire time, he was subject to it. Still just because someone was brave and defended our country, doesn't get acceptance from me to be able to run a country. Vote for McCain if you're wanting more wars, would like to get drafted, and speed up our financial crisis.

No it doesn't make him capable of running the country, it however does earn respect from many, including me.

He married into wealth after divorcing his first wife, but wealth in and of itself isn't a reason to vote for or against anyone unless you are a mindless class warfare zealot. I'm no fan of McCain, but acknowledging that people who overextended themselves should take responsibility for their actions is an issue on which he and I agree. When government tries to intervene in the market, shit hits the fan and soils everyone.

The concerns on his hawkish nature and the future of US foreign policy is very valid. Not mentioned, but also important IMO, is his views on civil liberties (different from civil rights).

What makes you think that owning a home is an entitlement that the government should pay for? If you can't afford to buy then rent like other people!

This list is a little outdated but John McCain is not a super rich guy. All the assets belong to his wife. "Everything except $50,000 is in her name or in trust for her and the children," Nancy Pelosi, leader of the Democratic minority, lists assets of up to $92 million held jointly with her businessman husband Paul.

McCain has done everything possible to keep his records sealed.

By sealing those records, he's condemned any POWs that are still MIA.

No one should be running if their government record is not an open book.

    "Principles"

This, from a punk who never served a single day in the military, and never would. Making pronouncements on a guy who endured hell. Priceless.

Looks like my stalker is back!

4 days (actually, you started cheating earlier). Must be a new world record!

Re: Serving in the military, if you want props for that, you're talking to the wrong guy. I'm not interested in participating in the Imperial Legion, subjugating foreign lands, and bombing civilians like McCain did. In light of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, he was in Vietnam killing people for no good reason at all. And that's certainly not a record to be proud of.

Congrats on figuring that out, punk. I pretty much drew the line once you and your lackey went to the sewer with your latest, so, no, I won't be playing nice any longer. You drown in your own bilious horseshit, and I will be very glad to point it up until I am either banned, or you leave.

I do too, and it doesn't change with the thread, anymore than "ban all holidays" means "MLK is groovy," depending on the thread, either.

Well, I'm not going to report you, so if you really want to be banned, you can just ask Rob or a Mod to ban you. Although I hope you stick around because it's really funny how you're obsessed with me, and ranting like a madman. Better than GTech when he's on his game.

Yes I loved the A-Team too but my point is it's all ficticious, McCain was no hero, he was a bleater, who would sell his country out, yet he still thinks that torture is good. He will honestly be an absolute disaster in charge of the USA.

As I have said before, God help us all.

In 2004 a lot of people ran around yelling that if Bush gets reelected there will be a draft. Bush is about to leave office and still No Draft. So I guess people are now going to change that Line to If McCain Gets elected you'll be drafted.

Have you ever thought that the army doesn't want a draft. Do you think they want to draft people who spent the last 10 years eating potato chips, playing video games all day.
