Good morning, I have a questions for all directory owners and generally for all webmasters who submit to these directories. Situation: I have a website with PR X and alexa rank X. The domain name doesn't actually mean anything, so it can be turned into anything else than the current website. I want to remove the contents of the website and instead launch a directory which I'm going to promote. Would that be okay? Opinions appreciated.
It depends how stupid the domain is. For example Hitesh used BQTM.com which is fine IMO. Its brandable and short. However the people using "americalsocialfitness2004.org" as their directory domain is pretty dumb. I think you get my point.
to be honest, I have been always against this idea. If you are going to start a directory on a domain that doesn't tell you anything...forget it. It may become a popular directory..but it is just my opinion. I hate to see a directory running on a "ordinary bulk" domain. When I joined these forums...I didn't knew almost nothing about directories, and I didn't knew that you can make money with them as well. I started with the free version of phpld, installed on a subdomain...on a "ip global positioning related site". I kept the directory free..and in 4-5 months...I was getting huuuge traffic on it. Later on I realised that those who would actually try to search me on Google, dir lists, etc doesn't matter, or just looking at the address I had ( the subdomain stuff.. ) they couldn't say for sure if I run a directory, or an IP related directory. The address I had was too long and boring to type or to remember. The domain name was not helping me at all. I couldn't promote my own brand ( example Zorg, Alive, Aviva, etc ). If tomorrow I would start another directory of mine ( and I will but not tomorrow ), I would pick an original name, easy to remember, highly brandable domain name that I would enjoy promoting...without knowing..that in the begining.. I or somebody else was running a "golf simulator" site for example or ano other miracles. Do not take my post personally, take the useful part of it. This is what I would do. And to answer your question, I voted : "No, I won't submit to a directory which re-used domain" Thanks, hyper
Depends on your pagerank x and alexa rank x! But if you choose to remove the current content, your alexa rank x will be dropped dramatically. And if you really want to replace it with a directory, it depends on how much time you can spend to hold the current pagerank.
this is why most of the directories do not get renewed after the first year..because some still think in this way!
Indeed. My case is 100% same like Hitesh's, it's a 4 letter .com without any meaning. Thanks for your honest reply Hyper
If you look @ Solicitations & Announcements you will see a lot directories running on a non-related domain name, with teriffying stupid domain names. That section should have some new rules for the announcements or that forum is going nowhere. If someone with a paid directory announces something there...or somebody with a decent (&normal) free directory...15 minutes later the thread is already on the second page because of the massive shit volume.
I ain't a fan of those directories either, but I think that a filter for directories with a proper domain name wouldn't be fair. I mean, it's a section for announcements of new directories. And it's exactly what the users do, announce directories, regardless of their domain name, pagerank etc.
Nice one, I did like that answer. People are sometimes naive to think buying up a PR domain such as totallyobsoletenamethatno-oneiseverhgoingtorecognise.com and then turn it into a viable and long term business when in reality it just isn't going to happen. Some of the names I've come across recently that claim they are directories are absurd. Buying to sell comes to mind here.
I dont like that idea if you want to have a travel site for romania you cant have a domain that is buycigaretes so a directory got to have a domain that is related to the directory or the niche of the directory. And i am totaly agree about the statement about Solicitations & Announcements forum moderators must do something about this section because it is not anymore useful.
It sounds to me that you think that directory is something which can be put last in queue. i.e If you want a domain get some pages and don't have any idea to make site, then you think directory can be installed. Directory is what we can call a container of good, resourceful site. But as WallaceYeung said quick buck crew damage the directory industry
It depends on the domain name, IMHO. All my directories have either meaningful names or brandable domain names which make them suitable as directories.
The personal blog in your sig is a classic example of NON brandable. What does ibnjuferi of the ibnjuferi.com mean? What this would support if it does mean something is that it might be brandable but on a geographically restricted basis.
No need for you to sigh! Wasn't interested in trying to figure it out but seeing as you showed me the link I looked. It re-enforces what I just said above. Geographically limited branding.
Yes, perhaps it is "geographically limited branding", but I am sure the owner did not intend his name to be a "brand" in the first place. Besides, we are supposed to be discussing about directories, why does this suddenly slip into talking about people's names?
