It's only an idea for me anyways.

May I ask if you got enough customers and what rates you was charging? To see if what I thought is actually realistic. :D

Sounds like a good idea, but than again, there's this clause in their agreement, which sounds like you need Jelsoft's consent.

I guess I would have to ask permission from vBulletin. Is there anyone who still rents vBulletin now. I can then ask them if they got permission.

I charged $15 a month and had 12 customers at most, though once i got 12 i didn't look for anymore because I didn't have any more spare licenses and didn't feel like adding anymore at the time for something i didn't know would work too long or not (which it didn't for me).

If you ask them and give them a good reason they'll usually let you do it. I mentioned something about providing vb to the underprivledged and possibly gaining them new lifetime customers (as I also offered a 'rent to own' feature).

    Thanks for that.

I guess if I do decide to do this, I would first need to tell vBulletin and get permission. Thanks for the help.

That’s why I started this topic. I see most of the website running vbulletin board. I don't think they have bought from vbulletin. So I won't to know how they pirate this thing. I personally don't like that. I am little angry about this. All running vbulletin board and I am on free board.
Can anyone bulk order the license and sell it at low cost?

I would not go with vBulletin if I were you, neither free nor paid. I'm sure many will oppose me here, but I feel SMF is better. I've used a pirated vBulletin before (not exactly used it, i just installed it on my server to test the controls before buying), but i didn't like the thing one bit..

Such is the way life goes, there are tons of people willing to pirate software (probably a lot of them here at DP ;))...nothing to do but report them...

Though curious, just because someone has vb, why do you think they haven't bought it?...just because you can't afford it doesn't mean someone else can't...$160 (soon $180) is really not that much money...

And about bulk buying and selling, if you want to bulk buy you can, but you have to wait at least 3 months before reselling them, and most people pay LESS than what vb charges for a used license...there is no reason to pay more since in that case they could just buy it from vb themself ;)...

Though, if you are talking huge amounts here you can actually work a deal out with vbulletin to get very nice discounts to be an 'officialish' reseller...but they only do those on case by case basis for the 'right' amount of money ;)...and in your case...I can guarantee you can't afford it as you can't afford 1 license...let alone hundreds ;)..

If you are going to come into a thread about vbulletin just to say something else is better...please give more details. I myself have never used SMF for the simple fact that I love vb so much I haven't needed to try anything else. It's truthfully a matter of preference, one persons favorite can be different for different reasons...

don't just say SMF is better...that arguement is worthless

Yes, i agree with you on the fact that everyone has their own preferences. I apologise for my bad usage of words. Actually what i meant to say was:

One should stick with a free software if he/she can't afford a paid and no doubt costly one like vb. And since starweb(thread starter) is already using SMF, he should stick with SMF rather than going for an illegal version of vb. And, SMF can easily be modified to work(to an extent) like vb...

I agree with you there, so I guess your bad use of words was the use of the word 'better'?...since you say in your last sentence it can't be modified to be as good as vb? :D

I'm just picking with you now :D lol...one of these days I really am going to try SMF...i've heard a lot of good things about it as a free platform

It can be downgraded so it can work(to an extent) like vb! ;)

BTW, i still think SMF is better. ;)

I agree with you here. I have seen a lot of longer (teenaged) people be acused at a forum because they have their own vBulletin licence. I think it's wrong that people just do this.

I just take measure before i buy to know whether this software can be got free. I never go for pirating since i am newbie. I always need help from vbulletin.

I use SMF, satisfied. But the popularity goes to vbulletin and its good platform. So i like to go for Vbulletin after i had some money.

Use MyBB - it's a free vB solution really, almost identical.

Apparently myBB actually copied the vBulleti code once, well parts of it. However vBulletin got them to remove the code.

I read this only the other day.
