"Muslims in western India have been observing a bizarre ritual - they've been throwing their young children off a tall building to improve their health. The faithful have been observing the ritual at a shrine in Solapur, in western India's Maharastra, for more than five hundred years. They believe it will make their children strong and say no accidents have ever happened."

Link to the video and news clip.

An interesting practice to say the least.

This is a stupid local/regional ritual and is not linked to Islam in anyway, for anyone that wants to know.

Click the link and read the story. I did not write it so direct your accusation to Reuters not to me. I don't really care what religion they are, it was just part of the news clip.

Why should I believe you over Reuters anyway?

Worshippers at a Muslim shrine in western India have been dropping babies from a tower for good luck.

The "good luck babies" are thrown from a height of 50ft on to a cloth sheet in a bizarre ritual that is thought to bring them good health.

Baby dropping has taken place at the shrine in Solapur, in the state of Maharastra, for over 500 years. It also takes place on special days in other parts of the country.

The ritual is practised by couples who are blessed with a child after taking a vow at the Baba Sheikh Umar Saheb Dargah or temple.

Locals claim there have been no accidents and children thrown from the tower do not suffer from any physical disability.

The ritual is observed by both Muslims and Hindus every year. source

Both Muslim and Hindu families take part in this ritual, however the state administration chooses not to interfere and provides heavy police security during the ritual every year. source

I saw that on TV as well, made me remember some African thing i've seen a while back, where all the people do some kind of a bungee-jumping, a very dangerous one, including kids, for similar purposes, some religious salvation, becoming a man and such.

Abortion is worse than this but I admit, when I saw it on the TV yesterday, I wanted to laugh but felt weird at the same time.

No i don't think so. I'm personally against abortion, Not on any moral grounds but on the grounds of personal responsibility for the consequences of ones actions.

But there is a big difference between inflicting something on a conscious human being and doing something to a collection of cells that is at best 'potential life'.

Either way, The comparison is irrelevant. my opinion on one thing is in no way relevant to the other.

fast to judge people throwing their children off a tower for the sake of tradition and superstition? Yeah, I am. It doesn't take long to make a judgment call on something like that.

people have different customs they are not asking you to change
they don't seem to have a problem. nothing bad happens to the kids. some of those people were kids once and they feel it was good for them.
    you don't like it.

This is ridiculous. Throwing babies off a tower is like entrusting them to Michael Jackson. Something bad is bound to happen.

They are caught by a cloth, so I guess that's safe enough. Also each religion and culture have their own sets of rituals. Bizarre to us but common to them.
