Why Do My Web 2.0 Sites Keep Dropping From Google Index?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by chixco, Apr 29, 2008.

Lately, I have been using a lot of Web 2.0 site such as terapad, weebly, etc, due to their SEO benefits. Normally, i am able to rank on the 1st and 2nd pages of google for my targetted keyword and some secondary ones, within 2-3 days of launching the sites.

However, the sites keep dropping off completely from google's index after 2-4 days at the top and I have no clue why.

What am i doing wrong? or what am i not doing? anyone got an explanation or a theory as to why this is happening and how can i resolve it?

    Thanks

I had a similar thing happening on one of my blogs that didn't have a lot of back links to it. New posts would ping google and it would get a new content boost that puts it near the top of the search results for a few days, but then it would get completely de-indexed. I figure Google sees a new page and gives it a chance, but if people don't link back to it then they'll just toss it in the trash. Do the pages you're looking for have significant back links pointing to them from other domains, or just internal links from the 2.0 site? Internal links from social media will depreciate as the content gets old and falls deeper into the pages of archives.

hmm not sure I agree with that, usually I see sites start out low in the serps then move their way up, I don't really see sites suddenly get deindexed, maybe you are just seeing an algorythm change or a penalty

maybe this person is putting up a page with no content with just an "under construction" sign

I wrote about this a few months ago when it was happening to me, I basically fixed the issue by getting more back-links. Google doesn't index all of the pages on larger websites like the OP is talking about, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was giving new pages a small chance to "blow up" with backlinks over a few days before taking it back out of the index.

SERPs USUALLY go up, but think about forums or 2.0.

Is it better to have a back-link on the front page of Digg, or a back-link 10 clicks into the "Top Stories" archive? In this case, the best SERP result of many 2.0 links is as immediate as the search engines can find it. Unless people link to the 2.0 site itself, those links are going to diminish as they go deeper into the internal page structure of the site.

I have seen the same thing, and I have some theorys:

    1. The backlinks fall off. I don't think bookmark sites keep links for ever, or if they do they fall deep in the site, and google doesn't treat them as high.

    2. You don't have other backlinks. If there are enough bookmark sites that YOU know about them all, google probably does too. They will rank you high but if you don't follow up, they will remove the link juice(or most of it) from the social site.

    3. You are overlinking. Most sites don't show up and then BAM get so many links. I think so many links so fast might trigger something in google.

    4. Its just volitle. I have dropped all the way off, then come back in a matter of 1 day.

First off, Web 2.0 sites don't have any SEO benefits. I think you're confusing things like semantic HTML markup and separation of structure, presentati0on and behavior from one another with Web 2.0.

What are these sites you're experiencing these problems with? (Do not PM me, post them here instead. If you PM with the links, they WILL be ignored.)
