You need to think of the idea yourself, nobody will do that for you, and if you struggle with being creative, then you won't ever be successful and cannot call yourself an entrepreneur. It only takes one good idea, but that's only the start of your long and painful directory journey. And it is a painful one - trust me on that!

Chances are you won't strike it lucky with just one idea, as my first directory wasn't good, and it sucked from a marketing point of view, so it never got off the ground. Too easy to get this thing wrong and many do.

It's also very expensive, and even the smallest web design mistakes/issues/problems are costly, not always in cash terms, but from a media point of view as well.

I agree. I intend to pursue my directory incrementally in order to minimize potential losses. Have you personally been successful with any directories? Thanks.

they are all well known designers with good portfolios in phpLD. I've worked with ipod, agent47 and aspidov and the work they provided is amazing.

Yes, I was featured in a major UK national newspaper, and due to be in a top industry magazine in April. But this doesn't mean every directory on the face of the earth will get press, so far it's only 2 UK ones in the past 12 months, so the UK doesn't really have too many genuine entrepreneurs, so it's a bit of a problem actually.

The other UK directory is a good piece of work, very unique design, specialist subject area, and good investors involved too. It doesn't look like a directory, put it that way!!!

You need to concentrate on this:

    1. The business idea must be very good, if not perfect. If not, then the business is dead, it won't be remembered (you must stick in people's minds).

The 'I have a directory and it's cool' doesn't sell!

    2. Forget about content, at least until you know where your idea is going. Content can be great, but can also make a site look crap if you get it wrong -and it's so easy to get it wrong.

    3. Domain must be simple, explain what the site is/does. It has got to be memorable, or your site won't be found. People must know it in a few seconds, and the keywords match it (obviously).

    4. You must keep finding ideas and this is the hardest part as you will eventually run out of them.

Congratulations! Sorry, I missed that article. Did you post the article anywhere? I would love to look at the website. If not, can you provide a link? Thanks.

Like Rich I'd be interested in what article. There's only a few days left in April, did you mean May? What magazine? I subscribe to 90% of them. :)

My PR firm are saying end of April/early May, but I'd have to check that as last time the Mag didn't run it (ran out of room), but they promised to run it for May edition. The magazine says end of April - for May edition, so yep May. (if all goes ahead....)

Which magazines do you get Jamie? Because there are like 100's, and I'd be interested to know which ones you got, then I can tell you whether I'm in them or not.

Thanks. It ran in the Daily Mirror in March, it wasn't really an article, more like a question and answer help guide sort of thing. What annoyed me was they made me out to be a novice, and even put that I sent in my questions asking for advice, which is complete bullshit. But it got me a pretty decent plug, and most of the details about the site were spot on, although they said the site was a great idea, but the design had no 'get up and go' about it Grrrrr lol. But the point is, it made it into a well respected National paper, and that's not easy.

It wasn't going to be featured in the main pages, but they gave me quite a large section all about me 'the entrepreneur', not so much in words, but the headline was very clever and the photo was outstanding (told the story).

Web address got included and a few lines, so for a first mention, yeah, it was good overall. I won't provide any links until all the press is done and my site upgrades are all complete.

I'll have to sort out a new office, as the current one is small, okay but smallish. :)

I prefer not to have to play Sherlock Holmes. :) If the link was already in print, why not just share it with us? I am sure far more people have already seen it in the Daily Mirror, than would ever see it on this thread. I would be interested in what you consider a successful directory site. In particular I would like to see the domain name you are using. Thanks.

Wonder if it was this one. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technology/2007/07/03/web-con-boy-of-16-locked-up-89520-19395567/ :D

Only kidding. I can't understand the need for secrecy based on previous boasts, but then again I can. My honest advice is for Event_King not to boast and let his work do the talking. If he's successful then fine, if not then no problem, who are we to judge.

Agreed. There are many ways to define success, e.g.: repeat traffic, profitable business, valued information, etc. If someone has a successful site, then let that person define it and display it. I would love to see it.
