I think I understand what you're trying to say... I think...

Wikipedia the site has a huge amount of trustrank or whatever google's trusti factor is(not pagerank). That's why they can rank #1 for anything so easily.

Wikipedia has the advantage of it's own virtuous circle vis a vis links.
It's own internal links have enough PR/authority to ensure that links to itself will be enough to get it that top position.
    Does it deserve it? No.
In real terms it has much intellectual authority as 'some bloke down the pub told me'

From what I understand, I kind of agree with this guy. Wiki has some unbelievable search rank.

Why don't just Google redirects to Wiki if it's such a great source of information?
It's always annoying to compete with Wiki, almost impossible.

I think google wants to buy Wikipedia one day if it's up for sale. Google offered to host Wiki couple of years ago but they turned them down.

If Wikipedia ever implemented a revenue-generating model, they would clean up big time!

A revenue-generating Wiki would be the end of Wiki. I'm sure they would have done it by now if they thought they could get away with it, but they have a good thing going - why chance ruining that. Oh hell, then again, what's the point if they aren't making money?

There is quite a bit of merit to what you wrote.

I've noticed that quite a bit lately.

If Google is going to put that much into Wikipedia, Google ought to start to over-ride the "no follow" nature of links in Wikipedia since it's heavily edited by quite a few people.
