    hi there java is already dead.. and its only good if you plan to develop mobile software and games.

    regarding .net

    its the best for application development which are web related..

    for example this is company which made millions of dollar with .net and just sitting full time on home

    www.seotrafficsuite.com/software/release/index.htm

    from my point of view..

    if u are in india

    its better you start a call center on small scale with 10 ppl

    far more rewarding then software project..

    i know a person named raja from ajsquare.com .. who started making software scripts for online business. now almost earns nothing from his ventures..

    softwares are not food or garments or anything real or physical. so there is no production capacity and no turn over of these businesses.. purely you will just gamble time and money

    good luck

    dead..??? Hmm :)

    Actually, there is no any other reliable alternative on Unix/Linux yet.
    .net just partially available on Linux and Macintosh.

    Or maybe you will say that PHP may replace Java on Linux??? :D

    My bias is towards .Net, whether you are talking about desktop apps (Winforms or WPF) or ASP.Net for the Web.

    I have a bias towards .NET (C#) as well. I work with it on my day job and I work with Java in school. .NET is far superior in my opinion.

    It really depends on what you are making it for. I've done both Java and c# myself (and still doing it) but I can't say that c# OR Java is better because they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

    You can go with .NET or JAVA. You will find projects for both.

    You can find many projects at freelance sites.

    Ok, superior might be too strong of a word. I think it is much easier to used than Java.

    I agree it depends what market you are shooting for;

    - web
    - desktop

    Personally I have little Desktop development experience, so i'll tell you what I know about web development choices. What kind of company do you want to work for;

    - small companies / persons looking for software for personal or small company usage
    - medium sized companies
    - enterprises

    The above person saying Java is dead doesn't know anything (really nothing actually) about enterprises; *all* enterprises in the world use Java for web development and the projects you see in that arena are a few $100k to a million. Problem is; you problably won't get them directly; you need to work via a bigger/well known company. Having said that; this work *is* worth it as projects go on for years and you only need a few to sustain a company and your life. Java rules here. PM me if you are interested in pursuing this option.

    Medium sized companies do projects around $50-100k and are much easier to get; you need a salesguy and he will get them for you; once you did a few and the clients are happy (which is ofcourse of premier importance) you'll get them. Both Java and .NET apply here; medium is leaning more towards .NET though for intern (intranet/extranet development).

    The you have small sized; usually PHP and such. This is the arena of low margins, a lot of competition and sites like DP, RAC etc. I would stay away from this personally, but projects are really easy to get (no salesguy needed; anyone of your staff can do it) as long as you are willing to shoot low and make low margins.
