It can help, but wont alone boost your ranking.

I think more likely it may help you somewhat in traffic rather than ranking.

The traffic you get from the yahoo is not worth, considering the effort you have taken in answering the questions

I get about 50 visitors a day from yahoo answers, not that I did reply, other people did, is just another way to get people to your website, said that I don´t think it helps google ranks in any way (the links are nofollow).

Yahoo! Answers uses nofollow attribute with all outbound links, just view the source code yourself to see. However, if your site is related to the question at hand it can generate some decent traffic. Most likely you'll end up being banned for spamming since 98% of the time thats what all the answers are.

It helps with traffic but not ranking. The community on answers are brutal........ the overall leader in the business section will get you banned quick.

Hmmm....to get around that whole banning thing.....can we say, "Different email addresses" and "logging in via proxy servers so your IP address changes?"

'Cause that can work very well....theoretically speaking, of course :)

And Yahoo Answers can be a very nice source of targeted, relevant traffic. Definitely worth using it, especially for new sites.

Hmmm.....to get around that whole banning thing...can we say "Don't spam"
    - you know how annoyed people get on dp with the spam for mobile phone warehouses and lose-money-quick affiliate spam? Guess what? - everyone feels the same way about spam.
If you have a service, or some information or a product that is the answer to the question, nobody minds a bit of self-promotion -the same applies on dp, facebook, yahoo answers, myspace - but consistently spam some irrelevant affiliate link and you are going to wear out your welcome pretty quickly wherever you do it.
If you have to keep changing your email and your IP - you are doing it wrong.

Who says I'm spamming anybody with an affiliate link?

I'm talking about posting relevant information for people in Yahoo Answers, pertaining to the exact question people are searching for information. And then including within your information a link back to a relevant ezinearticle or maybe an article at your website where you just MIGHT be also promoting a product. You can't include affiliate links at Yahoo Answers or you get immediately banned. I'm not recommending that anybody do that, that would be stupid and a waste of time and energy.

I myself don't use proxies or extra emails on Yahoo and have never had my personal posts banned.

But some people do use proxies when and if they have been banned, and personally I feel that this is worth doing as long as -- AGAIN -- the person is still posting quality information in their answers.

    I wasn't talking about posting crap. :)

Sometimes my marketing friends have had their IP banned when they have posted extremely relevant, quality responses at Yahoo Answers. And they have jumped back into the game with a different email address and sometimes hiding their IP. I know this because we compare notes all the time on different backlinking strategies.

It works, that's all I can say.

I don't think it helps with search engine stuff, but it does bring good traffic.

I get about 1,000 visits a month by spending 30 minutes a week.

You just came off that way, being a top contributior in Yahoo! answers for search engine optimization and a top answerer I get annoyed fast by spammers and trollers; so sorry if I read the book by it's "plain" cover. ;)

Yes, I use ssandecki on there as well.

I have been ranked #1 twice in advertising and SEO before I had a website only to get the boot. How do you get the boot when you have done nothing wrong? I figured the website owners must be losing money if someone past them in rank so i started my own site. ssandecki You give great answers but I notice you keep disappearing also.

Disappearing? On Yahoo! Answers? Like I said, I rarely answer questions anymore due to the massive spam that hits it.

Yahoo Answers is a good way to drive traffic to your site.
But then you should have good enough content otherwise your reputation on Yahoo Answers also takes a beating.
And as mentioned by others, it does not affect the PR as Y! uses nofollow on all outgoing links.

most people on Yahoo answers are looking for free info so the conversion won't be that high even from the traffic, disregarding the link juice
