For a multi-country website, subdomains or tlds?

I'm currently working on a site for a company. The company wants to deal in Ireland and Great Britain and they have the .com, .ie, and .uk of their name. Would it be better from a marketing and SEO perspective to use subdomains (e.g. ie.company.com) or individual domains for each country (e.g. company.ie and company.co.uk)?

I would use company.ie and company.co.uk instead of a .com because they appear in google.co.uk and google.ie

Subdomains are treated as a separate websites, so I'd go with tlds just for more solid look :)

    Edit:

To clear this up here is a good video release by google a few days ago
