PayPal Sent Money Without Me Saying Yes!

Discussion in 'PayPal' started by Dean_Saliba, Apr 24, 2008.

I came home today and received an email from Paypal with a receipt saying that I had sent a payment of $200.00 to Gregory S. Bair (six.sick@gmail.com).

I did not send this payment and I have just submitted a complaint to PayPal.

I am absolutely furious that someone is able to request payment and PayPal honoured it!

I logged into PayPal and the money is gone.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? Have they ever got their money back?

That is some serious problem right there. I'm sure Paypal will do something about it, it could be a security breach or whatsoever. Just change your password or scan your PC for some malwares, dunno. Good luck buddy.

I've opened an unauthorised claim with PayPal.

I've changed my password and my question thingy.

Someone said to me that this person has obviously got into my account and sent the money.

I have this feeling that I will not get this money back as the Unauthorised claim says they will talk to the othr person.

Well, if the other person won't reply I guess Paypal would be in favor to you. Good thing you filed a claim instantly before he gets to withdraw or transfer the money. In case the other party replies, you could always counter-defend.

This isn't "PayPal sending money without permission", someone got into your account and sent money away. The same could happen with your bank, credit card etc. You're lucky its only $200. Hope you get your $$ back!

PayPal is actually more relying on Buyers protection (i.e. person that "sends" money) so I believe everything will be normal and you will have your money back.

Btw, changing your password is okey, but you should think about "your latest activities" where you might have actually given the password away, if nothing looks suspicious then I would recommend you checkup your computer for spywares.

Yes thats true. Also PayPal will surely get your money back because it logs the IP Address of each transaction and login.

There can only be two reasons. One is someone who hacked into your account and the other is that the payment is part of a subscription.

I think what has happened is this person has managed to get into my account and has sent the money from my account. If PayPal log IP addresses then this should be in my favour as I have one of those IP addresses that does not change (static?).

I was annoyed before because $200 may not sound a lot but I worked for that and for someone to just take it so easily made me very angry.

I've read a lot of horror stories of PayPal siding with the thief which is why I thought I might not get the money back.

This has certainly made me think about changing my password and security question regularly.

I appreciate the feedback guys. :)

Please change your account password and open a dispute for that transaction and let paypal know about this. I think your account has been hacked..

I think either one of the following things must have happened:
    1) Some one illegally withdrew money via your paypal account
    2) You must have subscribed indirectly to that person and then later you found your money being used.

I had once suscribed to a free 7 days trial version product. Once I completed the seven day trial option, I realized after a month that my $30 was gone from my paypal account. In the following month, I had only $10 in my account but I yet found out that $30 was again being deducted by the person ( company). $10 was deducted from my paypal account and the rest money was taken from my credit card ( bank account). I was furious. Finally, one of my friend should me how to cancel the auto subcription. Next month onwards, I was free.
I will never fall for any free versions any more, which involves giving my paypal details to them.

I've had subscriptions via PayPal before and it always stats the word subscription in the email receipts I get.

I have just checked the email receipt I have about this particular transaction and in the field where you can put your own text it says "MOVING!"

Does anyone know how long it normally takes PayPal to settle this type of problem?

It can take a long time to get this settled... maybe never, or Paypal might nail it within a day or two. It all depends where the money went.

It appears that somehow or other someone gained access to your Paypal account.

What happens is criminal gangs phish, keylog or siphon the passwords (e.g. you sign in via an unsafe proxy and the data is siphoned off). The money gets shunted to another phished account, then another, and another, becoming ever less traceable and eventually it gets shunted to some bank accounts and the process is repeated until it disappears into the criminals' pockets.

Somehow your password has been obtained. You really need to take a look at your computer's security as a first step. Check for keyloggers, trojans and rootkits.
Sophos makes a free rootkit detector

    • Make sure you are running the latest antivirus, etc.
    • Don't use proxies to log into anything important.
    • Be careful about the sites you visit.
    • Don't run warez.
    • Watch out for file-sharing - they are often used to hide malware.

Yes buddy, its clear indication of some one hacked your account, got into it and done the payment.
Gud you have changed passwords and requested unauthorized payment.

If the guy hasn withdrawn or moved funds to some other account, most probably you'll get your funds back.

    gud luck mate!

    Good Luck!

Call them directly! UK number is 02086053000. This saves you money over the 0870 number because it's a pain to get through to someone. But i've resolved issues many times quicker by talking to someone directly. Also open a dispute. In this case you will get your money back in view of the circumstances.

PayPal have emailed me telling me there paying some overdue eBay fees with no eBay subscription before. They then sent the payment without my permission.

    They steal your cash.
