Okay guys (and gals), I've never owned an apple and have very little experience of using them. I've only ever worked on Windows pc's/laptops. I'm considering swapping over to an Apple desktop system - for the last few years I've not even used a desktop, just various Windows laptops. I'm looking at this - http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore?family=iMac 24 inch display 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme 2GB memory 500GB hard drive1 8x double-layer SuperDrive ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory Ready to ship: 3 days Free Shipping £1,429.00 If I have that then I can use it in place of a television and a music system as well. I can also wire up the kids Wii to it whenever they want to play it. How easy would it be to transition to a mac, and learn how to use it? I intend to hold onto my windows laptop, would there be any issues working on illustrator, photoshop or dreamweaver files on both computers, given they are obviously using different versions of the software? Like I say I've not had a desktop pc in a long time, but I need to get a tv and a music system so just fancied getting a pc that can do both, and started looking at the apple. Would this be a good computer to work with? I'm open to other suggestions, either pc or mac. I dont really keep up to date on actual hardware news and have no idea whats hot and whats not. I would primarily be using it with dreamweaver, psd, illustrator, all the usual net related things, as well as a home entertainment system - music and tv. thanks!
I hate my mac i never use it and i cant run my games or some software on it. If it was me i would go for windows and get a desktop just as good for much cheaper but thats just me.
The only critical software for me are the Adobe packages, and I know for sure they all work on the mac. I'm not fussed about games at all, I don't ever install them now as they just eat into my work time and distract me
Pretty easy,I got used to it in less than a week I guess.Photoshop works like a charm on macs, don't know about dreamweaver as I don't have it on my macs,I use Smultron instead. Btw,I'm typing on a 24" iMac right now,it's damn cool!
Because of the intel cpu that Mac uses now, you have the ability to run but Mac OS and Windows on the same computer. So the programs that don't convert just run them on windows
Thanks for the replies. soniqhost, I really want to avoid running Windows on a mac if possible. If I swap I don't want to have to use windows for anything at all.
Both of them have their pros and cons but I think you would be able to make a better decision if you can get access to a mac to get more experience using it before you decide.
I went to the big apple store and had a look at them, but theres only really so much you can do in the store. NsaneNoob, I think you might be the first person I've seen who describe Windows pc's as "reliable" when compared to macs. Expandable I'll give you that, the imacs arent going to be great for upgrading. No 2nd HD bay and they want £190 just to upgrade the 500gb to 1tb. For £190 in a normal pc you could an additional 1tb rather than upgrade the 500gb, and still have change.
If you decide to get a mac you could always do this. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html
It will be just a "Good Looking choice" as Mac is more good looking than windows,I don't see nothing more than that.
By reliable I meant that it is easier to rely on a PC than a MAC due to its great variety and all software being created mostly for Windows.
Hehe I bought a 24 inch imac, haven't had a chance to use it yet. Its been sitting on my table for a few days, I did test out the sound and watch a video on it and it looks pretty sweet. Not done any work on it yet though!
