SEO: Position within varying numbers of reported results

I have a new site that I'm doing SEO on. The position of the site has varied greatly in the past couple of weeks.

It entered the SERPS at 96.

Within two days it was at 91
On Monday it was at 85

On Tuesday a glitch in the system caused the home page url to appear with variables tacked on to the end of the url and it appeared at 24. The original home page url had disappeared from the top 100 in the SERP.

A few days later the glitch had been fixed and that url disappeared from the SERP. The original home page url reappeared at 50

Within 15 minutes the home page url appeared at 104. Later that day it appeared at 101, then 99 then 97. It has slipped over the past week to 100. Googlebot has reported a new crawl date 1 week later than previous. Some changes were made in the home page but the position in the SERP is unchanged. Subsequent changes made up until the 15th still have not shown up.

Yesterday evening the home page url completely disappeared. I just figured that it was flux. It has since reappeared at 100.

    What the h*ll is happening?

As you referred to, it's the everflux. Instead of worrying about the radical positioning, you should dedicate your time to getting links for that keyphrase. :)

Thanks for your input. I'm also noticing that the position in the SERP fluctates with the number of reported "results found"
ie: Personalized Results 1 - 100 of about 3,270,000 for search term.

As the number of reported results fluctuates from around 2.5 million to 40+ million my position changes. Sometimes up and sometimes down. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it....

85 to 96. why bother with such a small difference?

its not like you got ranked 1 then suddenly disappear from the ranking totally

You know, I really get annoyed at the number of sheer sh*tty comments that I get here. When you track anything you record all of the numbers whether they are significant at that time or not. In time they may be....

alright all the best in tracking those numbers

    96, 95, 85, 24, 50, 104, 101, 99, 97, 100

im not sure if you realize that these number aren't significant at all barring the fact that the www is dynamic and changing every time. i hope someone else can help you.

This sort of activity is normal, and therefore of little concern, in new sites. Tell me, would I be correct in assuming that your site is less than 6 months old?

I hope so too. You still haven't told me why it happens at all. Maybe someone else already has. Did you even read the thread?

Some people watch things to figure out why they do what they do.....

    I'm one of them.

Arnet, lets keep this discussion peaceful.... :)

Can you private message me the URL of the site, I want to check something out and see if your getting the same results as one of my sites. I've notice a lot of changes in search results up and down with some of my clients. This might be due to a algorithmic change or possible Pagerank update.... Which DC's where you comparing your results from?

I read a lot of threads that get off-topic and are full of asinine remarks that have absolutely nothing to do with the problem at hand. I've been to an awful lot of meetings where absolutely nothing got done.. I hate both.

Well, ssandecki is right - there has been something afoot lately. Though given how new your Web site is, I'd honestly expect fluctuations such as this to be occuring, especially as Google and the other search engines try to determine how to best (and most accurately) place your pages in its index with regard to the keywords that are being searched for (which may or may not be the ones you want to rank well for).

PMing him might be a good way to figure out what's going on - I'd offer to help (extensively) myself, but I'm getting caught up with work after being away for three weeks due to a family crisis. He's a really nice guy who knows his stuff (in fact, he and I often agree far more than not when it comes to SEO, despite him being an SEO consultant and me being a Web developer - how often does THAT happen?)

Well, I have been heairng rumors of an algorithm update, and Feedburner (which Google owns) has also been acting up lately as well. I normally tend not to worry about it too much and just go about business as usual, but then again I'm pretty conservative and strict with what I do anyway.

Yes most definitely, it seems to be only pushed to some datacenters and not others which is making the SERP's appear really unstable.

For instance search "SEO" and i'm beating Aaron Walls, seo.com, SEOmoz etc on some DC's and on others i'm as far back as #15

I just woke up, but i'm going through my test sites to see what Google's trying to do.

    @Arnett:

Chances are if it is it less than a year old (in your case 8 weeks) it will tend to bounce around a lot more than well established websites. It could also be the various filters Google has implemented that the other DP members are mentioning as well; however, I would tend to lean towards the fact that its probably something to do with that fact that your site is new. In the mean time, keep promoting the website and over time the rankings should stabilize and you should slowly rank higher.

Well it almost looks like they are playing around with browsing habits and click patterns to factor in the SERP placements.

The ones who have pages dropping or rising large amounts, take a look at your past bounce rates for these pages.
