A truly horrendous tale. Sadly, my own experiences and those of many other people appear to mirror similar events.

 

I didn't read ^^ it ^^ because I already have a major pain in my toe...no need to add to it. But I empathize with the poster's story and wish 1and1.scum a quick, yet painful corporate death.

I started using 1&1 about two years ago. They seemed cheap but also fairly reliable. That was then...

This is now...

- Pathetic customer support
- Haphazard domain registration (I actually waited two days for them to register a domain)
- Server downtime a regular occurence

Avoid 1&1 at all costs. If you have domains or sites with 1&1 I strongly suggest you switch them asap.

Its 3 days going on 4 for me to get a few domains registered.

 

It only seemed that way. People fall for the glossy full-page magazine adverts. I know I did and that was a couple of years back and in the year I was with them I never once had a working website. A template I was unable to update and a bunch of domains was as far as I was able to get with them. Customer support was dreadful. Luckily, I was only testing them out as I was already hosted elsewhere so it didn't hurt me too badly but I did fall into the 1&1 blackhole, plus I lost a bunch of great domains.

Do yourself a big favour and don't go near them. Ever.

wow.... I just registered a domain with 1and1 and at the time thought it sounded great. I found this forum while searching for help on how to begin publishing my site as I found it very confusing. If I cancel my domain name with oneandone, can I then register the exact same name with another company? (let's say I want the name www.kitkat999.com exactly)
I really need the same address as I've printed it on all my business cards and other publicity for a film I just made and I can't change any of it...

 

Do NOT cancel your domain with 1&1. What you should do is TRANSFER it to another registrar. There are many to choose from but some of the biggest are Godaddy.com, Namecheap.com, Moniker.com, Name.com, Register.com.

It will probably take a week or two (another complaint about 1&1 is their domain transfer times) but it's worth persevering with.

The only thing you will need to bear in mind is that when you reg a domain with ANY registrar there is a 60-day retention period, meaning you cannot transfer it to another registrar for 60 days. You'll maybe have to wait for that period to elapse before you can transfer away from 1&1.

If you cancel the domain it will enter what's called a 45 day redemption period and will then be 'dropped'. Dropped domains are usually snagged by domain speculators as soon as they become available (i.e. the second they drop) so if you really need / want your domain you will need to transfer it as outlined above or risk losing it.

 

I hadn't seen this information before. It looks useful. It's funny how the hate for 1and1.con never seems to dissipate. It's been two years since I first got kicked in the rickies by them and I am still trying to stop people from using them. I'm probably also the only domainer who has taken it to another level and have boycotted SEDO since the moment I learned that Sedo is 41% 1and1.scum. If you use Sedo, you give profits to 1and1.con and that's a fact. There's a tough pill for some folks to swallow.

 

I've been with 1 and 1 for about 3 years now and I've never had any problems... I've been through allot with them to. I've registered the free .infos when they were giving them out... canceled them after a year and didn't get any charges. Canceled many other domains the same way.... Also had a dead credit card with them and they notified me and gave me a week to change it so they could charge me...

Really you only need to have 2 things to go with 1 and 1
1. patients
2. a brain

and you'll be able to use them smoothly

I register domains at 1and1 because of their cheap prices, but I direct the domain names to my hosting account at HostGator.

I currently have two hosting accounts with 1and1, but I am phasing them out. 1and1 is a cheap registrar, but I've had problems getting customer service. For example, I've waiting on the phone for over an hour, and the person who finally answered was very unhelpful. If you need a cheap host for a few small domains, 1and1 is fine. If you want larger scale, or if you plan to grow, other hosts might be better. Still, I think 1and1 is good for domain registration.

 

Its been a year since my post regarding 1and1 and just to set the record straight - I don't host websites with 1and1 or webfusion! I am with easyspace - that is going on friend's recommendations. My only advice I can give anyone out there looking for recommendations about which host to choose is NOT to listen to the BS being spat on out on this forum because noobody is offering anything useful to say. Its just a HATE forum. I'm now deleting my account because its of no use whatsoever..

 

To set the record straight I was talking about my own webhosting experiences. A year ago I was new to webhosting and I was searching for useful feedback and recomendations! Yes, I found Digital Point via Google - I never did find any useful recomendations from forums like these, just Hate. So went on a friends recomendation and guess what, it wasnt 1and1 and it wasnt webfusion.. but easyspace.. So I guess I now work for easyspace huh? DONT LET CONSPIRACY RUIN YOUR THINKING! DKHEAD

 

I have hosted many small websites with various web hosts, and find like most industries, web hosting follows the 10/80/10 rule. Ten percent are excellent and the cream of the crop, 80 percent are decent (neither great or dreadful), and ten percent are so far out of touch with the rest of their competitors, they are in the wrong business. To find a really good web host, you have to do your home work. Start by typing in their company name or URL in a search engine, and see if you find any reviews, both good or bad, from impartial 3rd parties, this can also be helpful to find info on server up time. Next visit the web hosts website, and check the various plans. Key things to look for are band width usage, storage limits, and additional features such a good control panel that can accessed 24 hours a day. Note: having to phone your web host to request log-in password changes etc, suggests a company that is operating in a different era. When comparing the different hosting fees, also check their payment schedules (while extremely rare, their are still a few dinosaurs that demand one year full payment up front). Lastly, if you plan on having your website hosted for many years with the same host, it would be worth a quick phone call to check out their customer service. One of my pet peeves, is smaller companies that give the attitude that they are doing you a favor by allowing you to host your site with them.

Which brings me to my pick as the worst web host company. COMPUTER ENGINEERING INC. found at www.computerengineering.ca/
Their are web hosts with more down time, and slower servers, but this company takes the prize, because their bang for your buck is so under whelming. In today competitive market place, if most of your competitors are providing twice the service for half the money, then your web hosting can only be rated as bad.

 

It is hard to decide on any service hosting on otherwise. I can never truly trust reviews either, i mean who writes them? I have NEVER reviewed anything in my life as a consumer. Even recommendations from colleagues or friends can be a erroneous as they can receive a perfect service while your fails. Specifically on hosting i am having a lot of trouble finding a host i like the look of. As the site i am creating is in the escort field it is neither "normal" content nor "pornographic". Also, while it is the WWW your server location has a bearing on your geo-location so this is something else to keep in mind. This put me in the middle ground and i think i will just to take a leap of faith and see what i end up with. Oh and by the way love the 10/80/10 rule but this the breakdown is a bit skewed.

thanks for the warning do a google search about them and nothing good comes up they have been doing that for years now i really dont know how they were able to get customers that way..

o well but I avoid them like a plague even when they have nice domain prices..

 

I never used them. I used bluehost, which is the best.

 

I use 1and1 for dedicated servers and they've always been quite good. Outages for a few hours a couple times a year, otherwise reliable. The price is very competitive, the bandwidth allowance generous, and the remote console for reboots etc is great.
