Hostgator / Hosting question...

    Hi all,

I see there is already a Hostgator question on the board right now, but my questions are different ;)

Basiclly, i've thought about it, and decided that the 99% uptime that hostgater offer is better then what the "happy dreamhost team" seem to be able to give me. (which sucks, as i've just signed up for another 12 months)

So i have some questions before i join hg:

(i'm asking you guys, as i dont want the sales pitch crap i'd get from the live chat)

    1. Has anyone had any problems with the "unlimited" bandwidth, or the 1TB of space. Any warnings that your using too much etc?
    2. Is the 99% uptime accurate, or have you noticed your sites down at all.

    3. Do you have anything to say to a potential HG member that could make me decided for/against them?
    4. Will moving my sites from Dreamhost to HG affect my ranks in google? Any advice on a smooth change.
    5. Have any of you php developers found any features turned off, such as file/read write - or any others not working?

    Thats basiclly it.

If you can answer even 1 it would be helpful.

    Many thanks.

I have recently taken SEOhosting package which is basically an SEO friendly hostgator account, it offers 5 different IP's, a handy feature.

    1. No bw issues so far
    2. I have noticed no down time at all so far (2months in)
    3. I found the initial setup tricky, my previous host had a much simpler system to use, i am steadily getting used to it, plus they have a handy live help feature meaning issues can be quickly resolved.
    4. My change over went smoothly and i have noticed no adverse effects.
    5. I am not a php developer, but i havent come across anything thats caused an issue.

    Good luck

I had a crappy host too when I first started out. Hostgator is one of the most reliable hosts in the business, I use both Bluehost and Hostgator which are both good and have great uptime. Not a single host can guarantee 100% uptime, but so far I haven't had any downtime. Your traffic can go down a little (I noticed a 15% decline for four weeks) after moving servers but thats only for a limited time, remember the better uptime should compensate for that. If your present host is no good then dont wait any longer and move your sites, it will save you a lot of frustration. Good Luck!

I have used HostGator for the past 3 years after using a number of other hosting companies. By far, HostGator is the tops.

When you move your site(s) from one host to another regardless of the new host always make sure that everything is moved over correctly before changing your nameservers to your new host. The transition should have no effect on your SEO.

The only complaint I have about HostGator is that it doesn't allow proxy websites. Other than that, they have been great to me. I have my make money online blog set up there, and you can check out that link to see how fast the server load is. The link is in my signature.

Host gator is a very reliable host - we have also had fantastic success with SEO results even though all sites are using the same IP address... Does not seem to effect the outcome too much

Unlimited domains and VERY good uptime is real bonus.

The few technical issues that i have had over the years were quickly remedied - if push comes to shove just use the toll free # The people who answer work out of Texas... NOT INDIA... nothing against India - but it is nice when the techs are local to the servers.

If you want your site to load fast I suggest you don't host from hostgator
