How will I know how many backlinks does a site has?

Also, how will I know if a forum or social bookmarking site or just any other website has a dofollow or nofollow link?

It varies because some search engines won't count certain backlinks while another may count them.

just google for "Backlink checker" and more over i'll suggest you to check Yahoo site explorer. It is the best one to get a little detailed report.

For easy solution of finding out if a link is follow or nofollow use the Greasmonkey plugin for Firefox.

If you use yahoo the most accurate query for me is:

    linkdomain:www.yoursite.com -site:www.yourdomain.com

Finds the total amount of inbound links and subtracts the links comming from the inner pages.

    cheers

If you setup google webmaster tool for your website, you will get accurate back link information that google discovered. Google web master tools is better than yahoo site explorer.

personally, i use the linkdomain tool in yahoo

    1. go to yahoo.com, not .co.uk (or any other)
    2. inh the search bar, type linkdomain:yourdomain.com (no spaces and no www)
    3. this will give you all of the links that yahoo recognises to your entire domain, not just the home page as other tools do

Yes, that's right but you should type
    linkdomain:yourdomain.com -site:yourdomain.com
in case you want the internal links to be excluded.
