LOL - so true! if only there was SEO back in my time, i'd probably be a bit richer now.

carl ocab is a filipino, by the way. filipino webmasters have also been intrigued with his success - in fact, one popular tech guy raised the issue of him probably being 14 and that his dad did the work. eventually, carl placed a comment on that tech guy's blog and challenged to meet him in person. they were supposed to meet "after school." interestingly, carl placed that comment at 10:30 AM - that's usually a time when kids go and attend school. anyway, i'm not sure if they really did meet after school and if carlocab was really able to prove himself as the real author of his blog.

I also think because of the age of the person to. So a lot of hype was built up and gave a boost in the traffic. And I am sure even posting info about the 13 year old and keywords and seo also gave it more of a boost

And still to day "SEO" is fairly irrelevant. Sure, there are some basic things you can do to make it easier for spiders to index your sites (clean code, heading tags, sitemap), but if you have to forcefully build links then your content is obviously not worth linking to, so make better content. I just crack Google's algorithm, can I have a cookie?

    Uh, done with your whining?
You can MARKET you content with doing SEO. Marketing does not equal SEO - SEO is just an overhyped aspect of marketing.

    For example:
    - SEO would be to submit your site to directories and paying for links
    - Marketing would be sending out a press release talking about the launch of a feature, product or service

In this case SEO gives you a quick amount of defined links, whilst the press release could yield no results, but if your site is worth talking about people will find it and talk about it, giving you potentially hundreds (or thousands) of natural links, brand-recognition and a lot more influence in search engines than just link building via directories.

SEO is "optimizing" your site for search engines, although it's basically just manipulating them to think your site is uber. Marketing is getting other people to talk about your product, or service and seen by the wider community.

It's a sad day when people consider SEO to be marketing, it's not. It's a sub-sub-sub-sector of marketing.

nice post. I also sense something is not right with this kid. I believe Carlo is a smart kid but obviously his father helped him a lot. Who made a title "...with a 13 years old kid"? Him or his father? His father, obviously. When Carlo wants to change his title to 14 years old kid, who told him not to do so? His father, obviously. And I think Carlo doesn't attend school a lot. Maybe he is an outcast of the society there in his country. And someone with .blogspot subdomain beat him in "make money online" keyword. He's smart but not a genius. Even a lazy young man can become rich if his father helped him set up his throne. This has been happening too many times in the real world, why not in online world?

Anyway I thought being number one or two in "make money online" kind of keyword will give you a lot of money. But recently I saw an advertisement option in carlocab.com and it seems he only made a few thousands of dollars per month. Well, make money niche is always overrated, I think.

Google is where i want to be high dturnbull.. not a select few people minds. to get links people have to have a site,, and in this age people read online.. screw press such as newspapers. i agree good content does keep the visitors. but the extent to which it gets them is none without links. check www.xninelivesx.com.

When I was 13 I couldn't get ranked number one in any search engine. Because they hadn't been invented yet. You youngins are lucky these days to have such easy ways to make money. It beats working at McDonalds.

Uh. I think you're missing my point.

Good content, marketing (such as press releases and creating a brand) will lead to natural links, people actually caring about your site and a loyal base of fans. Google is retarded, they're designed to bring relevant content to visitors, they can see if a site is deserving to be ranked well most of the time.

That doesnt matter. if a site has no new content every now and then and a high bounce rate google can see that. Explain press relese because i dont think you will break world news.
