    Hi:

I have a question for directory owners. Which hosting do you recommend for free directories? What kind of hosting plan do you recommend?

    Best regards,
    Jeet

    Hostgator

Their baby plan is $7.95/month and you can host an unlimited number of sites. :)

Thanks. I have tried godaddy's two plans. They are cheaper than hostgator but were very slow to host a directory. That's the reason I am looking for directory owner's opinion :)

Don't use hostgator. They will suddenly suspend your phpld directory.

I think they are all pretty relative. I use GoDuddy and am happy with them most of the time. Some of the time not so much, but the grass is not neccessarily greener in other pastures...

The one thing I am happy about with my host is their call center is always very helpful.

I use hostgator for all my sites which aren't mission critical. It's great, cheap and I personally haven't had any issues whatsoever with them, except from when I asked about phpLD on a hostgator account.

When I first joined DP, somebody made a comment about hostgator not allowing phpLD to be installed on their servers when I was looking to buy and install my first script. So I asked the support, and was told that if it causes strain on the servers or causes too many mysql queries, it'll get switched off, even if you don't go over your hosting plan specs. I then asked if it would be shut immediately, or if I'd be warned - obviously I was told it'd be shut down as soon as they found the issue. Finally, I was then told they couldn't be sure if they can support a script like phpLD, and if they had any issues, I'd get shut down. So, in the end, I gave up with a hostgator directory.

HostGator will be fine for your directory buddy. I use lunarpages for 5 of my directories with no problem.

I have used GoDaddy, 1and1, and Hostgator in the past to host directories. I would recommend 1and1 and Hostgator. I would NOT recommend GoDaddy. There were regular periods of downtime...and their support isn't great.

Thanks everyone. I have seen bad reviews for Hostgator and I have experience GoDaddy myself :) I am wondering if anyone is hosting their directories on GoDaddy?

Hi. If you see threads above, some of the directory owners have said that their hosting was not 'comfortable' with directories because they consumed too many resources.

I think 'bandwidth' wise all hosting plans would be fine.. but I am not sure how good they will be 'resource' wise :)

I have 1 directory on hostgator. I haven't had any problems in 2 months but it is kind of like walking on egg shells as I try to minimize the resources I use. I have heard the same thing that they discourage software that uses a lot of resources.

I think it is pretty bad when a host sells you enough disk space and bandwidth to supply a third world country but switches you when they decide that you have used too many resources. Reminds me that I should back up that database right now (just in case).

Thanks folks. I guess either one can take a risk with shared hosting or get a VPS / VDS kind of thing to avoid 'resource crunch' :)
