After posting a review on one of the better known directories I was inundated with requests to review others. I had a week or so studying so couldn't do them until now. First one to stand up to the line was hyper who asked for his three footer links to be looked at. I discussed certain things with someone who I think is one of the more respected members of the forum here an0n and told him that I didn't want to review like a fellow directory owner or as some kind of super expert, I wanted to simply offer constructive critique looking with the customer in mind not the webmaster. Let me know how you think I've done so I can quickly move on to the rest on my list. Please try and avoid slating me or the directory as this is intended for everyone including me to learn how to improve on things, lets start keeping on track so we can get good threads going. Blog is HERE Look forward to some constructive comments.
Jamie, you review seems fair enough, what one must remember is that what the review is, is that it one persons view or take on the subject at hand and in that there will always be points people agree or disagree with but in that they are not wrong or right but just, a persons view. Further to that but in relation to your blog / review ( and from my view only, so not wrong or right ). I find your style of writing after reading several blogs in a similar way to eating cotton candy, there is a lot of it but as soon as you try and get your teeth into it, it all dissolves with nothing real solid to bite into. This tends to ( for me ) make me nod of to sleep and then resort to skipping down looking for something solid amongst the text and very rarely do i find something that smacks me in the side of the head and wakes me up again from the induced coma type effect. In that after reading a few blogs and getting the same feeling, you are less tempted to then go and have a look at the next one. ( there is only so much cotton candy a person can eat ). Like mentioned only my honest view and by adding some meat and potatoes in a tactful way may help in the blogs standing out from the rest of the many many worthless and boring blogs people write and then in that give you people lining up to read your next episode.
Very well written review. They are using a free template that's why they have links in the footer. But seen as they have taken the much important decision to add nofollow to them I'm sure it all be alright...
I usually make a point of saying that. Some people like reading horror stories, others like reading love stories, mine's a documentary, boring to some, fascinating to others, the one thing it contains though is facts. That's fair enough, but its not mean to criticise, (That's way too easy to do), this is critique. I'd be delighted if you could give me a few pointers via p.m on how to do what you think would improve my style of writing. I'll never change it, that's just me, but to make it more meatier in a subtle way as you put it is something I'd be happy to look into. Sure, you can get sick of something, simple answer is not to read blogs anymore. I'll still write them. That's not a problem, I encourage good or bad feedback. Yours is neither, its just feedback that is welcome. I can't or won't be tempted into condemning these directories though, that would be too easy to do, the owner asked for critique, the time will come soon enough when I start adding spice to my writing, they'll turn from critique to criticism and reviews then, but hey, even then people will complain that I've taken their candy off them.
I found the review to be very constructive and well written albeit I can see on reading it JamieG is trying very hard not to Directly Insult the website owner and is trying to offer constructive advice about the general layout and user interface of the website. If JamieG where to offer SeO optimization advice showing examples of what should and shouldnt be done I would think it would be a completely different blog, other then that I would also point out that some people do not know much about SeO and I feel this kind of blog (ie none technical) would be welcomed by most. Good Blog I personally liked it. Thanks aubenrey (written same time as JameiG`s post, he beat me to the submit button )
I appreciate what your saying. The thing is that the WOW factor as you put it would mean I'd have to comment on the SEO of the site, because that's where the 'sizzle of the sausage' is. Perhaps down the line, and if people want these hybrid type reports that contain comment on both the design and SEO of a site then I'll look into providing that until then I'll stick with the cotton candy approach while looking for a way to make things a little meatier.
Thanks guys for the few feedbacks, thanks a lot Jamie for the review. To be honest, I didn't have the nerve to read it all now, because I just came home from work and I am so tired. As for the design, links, etc & the whole story, I want to tell you that I will upgrade to phpLD 3.3, I will change the template, and I will promote it a little bit harder. Promise to read it all tomorrow, and untill the "big jump", I'll be working on it a little bit... Untill then, have a nice evening & thanks again for the review. hyper
Its a pleasure, we're going to review the rest for you and won't be critical just for the sake of it. Because of the lack of response here I'm also going to pick on directories at random and not going to hold back. Please or offend I did offer these guys the chance to help me help them but some just don't like constructive criticism. I'm also offering a SEO critique which should help people improve their serps without paying a fortune to the SEO companies as well, that will be to guys like you though who have been kind enough to stand up to the plate and accept a review.
