What a bunch of BS - I could go to any country and ask people the same quesitons and get the same stupid answers -

Why don't they come to my neighborhood, full of Drs, Lawyers, medical students, college students and ask the same questions?

The problem with the education system is that they don't pay enough money to the teachers. A lot of the good teachers leave to get a job that pays more money. So, they don't have enough teachers, the classrooms are overcrowded.

Another problem is the cost of education. College is out of reach for so many financially.

The Government does not control all education - there are tons of private schools in the US

When you make a comment like this, it sounds like you don't have much education.

The educational level at private schools is still top notch. It's just no fun being poor in the United States. Hell, there's no country where it's great to be poor.

Nothing new here. In order for the government to govern with the less problem as possible, it keeps the education evel very low.
When I go to TN for my business, I can hear people saying they'll vote for Georges Bush. They don't even know he'll be gone.
It's a way to control the population.

    An anecdote:
I went to a store in Tennessee the other day.
Of course I have an accent, I'm Belgian.
The lady, hearing my accent, asked me where I was from.
I said I'm originaly from Belgium.
She asked me if it was in Tennessee.
    Shocked, I say no.
She reply: " Oh I knew it was another state"...:D

So, you get the level in Tennessee

Get real with this sophomoric generalizations. There are stupid and uneducated people in every country.

In order to prove who's the smartest, perhaps DP can organize a contest between American posters, such as myself, and the rest of you.

Before I suddenly believe in how educated and intelligent the rest of the world is, I need proof, because there sure do appear to be a lot of dumbasses in the world, and they aren't all flying the "Star Spangled Banner".

You can understand why poorer countries have a bad education system... But when in a country like the US, where the internet has been invented, and here it seems like they have unlimited resources, but still people are so dumb so as to vote for Bush for the second term.

What is the Per Capita Income in an average US home? Compare that to India, and look a the general education system.

The cost of American education is quite prohibitive, taking for eg MBA at say Harvard, you will be buying $100 000 or more just to have the honor of exchanging name cards with fellow classmates.

The "US educational system" is the sum of all schools in the United States. There are underperforming schools and schools in wealthier areas (including public schools) where the education is top notch.

Poor people get a bad deal, including a poor education. America is a dog eat dog place, that's just the way it is.

That said, there are no countries in the world where being poor is a walk in the park.

As to people being "dumb" for voting for George Bush, perhaps they supported his policies? We live in a Democracy, after all.

The worst I had to hear apart from the times I had to explain where Belgium exactly lies (on many occasions) is that Belgium was the capital of Brussels...

Well, excuse me sheilasultani if you don't like to hear the truth about your beloved country but there's no other First World country like yours. While I agree there are idiots everywhere in the world and such replies could be found anywhere, the concentration of these type of morons in the USA is frightening.

Codythebest, I certainly agree that when you have a large number of non-thinkers in a "democratic" system, it's a way to control the population and they can always serve as ballots to push "certain" political agendas. All you need is to persuade them but that's the easy part.

Lexiseek, no need for a competition on DP. You can't represent a whole nation with just a handful of forum members. Perhaps the Pisa results might persuade you.
Name one First World country where the educational level is worse. There isn't.
You can get a good education in America, but hardly affordable. I thought that education was a basic need and should be free.

Yep, this is definitive proof that we're all fat and stupid. I'm sure that was done with minimal editing too. I might be retarded(just by virtue of being an American) but I'm smart enough to realize how lucky we are that the rest of the world has decided to let us be the dominant force in the world. Thank you The World, thank you so much for giving us so much influence in the world, because we're too fat, stupid and lazy to have made a positive impact otherwise.

I know it's hard to swallow. However, nobody says Americans are stupid. What we're saying is the education level in the US is very low and poor.
When I was at uni in Belgium for my Bachelor's degree in Math, we had a Math PhD from a US uni for a year and he told us he just couldn't follow!!!
I do have a daughter in a US school, she's 17 and she can not calculate mentaly. Everybody use calculators. If you go with 2 digits as 13X28, they just can't get an answer unless they use a calculator!!
    I mean C'mon...

I'd agree if that was the assertion, that our educational system needs to be improved. But that's not the message of the video. The whole point of the video is to paint all Americans as stupid an ignorant. The opening statement from that video is "... a lot of people give Americans a bum rap for being stupid and knowing nothing about the world..." . Then they go on to show an edited video where I'm sure anyone who knew anything was cut out. That's just ignorant anti-Americanism.

That map is distributed way too uniformly to be anywhere close to accurate.

Here's another list of estimates according to nation:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_and_the_Wealth_of_Nations

Choose which source you want to believe. I'm not a big fan of giving too much meaning to sample means anyway. For example -- and I'm not saying this is necessarily the case -- a nation's average could be skewed by an influx of unskilled and uneducated migrants, or systemic problem or problem with the educational system that causes or allows the less fortunate to not properly cultivate their brain power, or iit could be skewed to the upside by other factors.

To me statistics like this start becoming somewhat trustworthy when you have a variety of ways to read the data, for example knowing the mean, median, standard deviation and having a graphical representation of the curve. That's much better than just knowing the mean without any real context.

european education system is not much better, anyway.. this has a logical explication in polithics: if you want to control a nation would you like it to be a nation of critical minds or rather you'd prefer to keep it in the ignorance?
