    I have seen both an increase in traffic and search engine rankings because of signature links, even those at DP. I think they are very important. :)

    getting new sites indexed is always a big help, and im sure if you write some decent posts, people are far more likely to visit your site too.

    Well i would say that 10,000 PR 0 backlinks are equilivnet to 20 PR 6 backlinks, so it really depends on the qualtiy of links, not the amount.
