So I am new to SEO, but have managed to get my site in the top ten with some help from others. I think primarily its been by being listed in Link Directories. I've done the whole thing where I pay someone to get submit me 500 times, and so forth. Sometimes people say these sites are PR4, etc. but when i check, very few have significant PR. Are these sites basically pointless? I've always heard its more quality than quantity. Other people are selling PR4 links, etc. individually. Are these much more worthwhile links? Is buying these links very risky with google? If I examine the site and it doesn't look like its sold tons and tons of links, am I -- for the most part -- in safe water?
They count and from my experience if used right help a lot in rankings Forgor about PR it's just a number nothing else
No point making wild comments without backing up said statement. You want proof that PR matters? Read the Google FAQ.
Link directories are, considering the strength, useful - if not essential. @spider-man - I have to agree with you - I tried hard to convince myself that PR is useless, but I realise, it's important, although not the most important - especially, in this case, for directory owners (like you and I) Cheers!
I have a few PR 0 and PR 1 pages on page 1 of G,Y and MSN for competitive terms. PR is not neccessary for page 1 or 2 on competitive keywords or phrases. I dont mean to sound argumentive, but to just share the fact that it can be done. One of my sites (index.html page) used to be a PR 3, ranks better now that its lost PR to a PR 1. Of course, supposidly G devaluated PR. Organic search traffic is organic search traffic, PR is PR. Similar to Alexa rank, PR is by no means a measure of search rankings. Some guy Mr. Page (Forgot his first name, Larry???) started the "PAge Rank". It used to be the big thing everyone wanted. I'm starting to see page rank be as important as Alexa ranking by myself and other webmasters. Sure, I'd love to have a PR 7 or 8 site with an Alexa of 10,000, but only for bragging rights!!! Another big one that has popped into the picture is Quantcast. Right up there with Alexa... I do know how to manipulate Alexa, but find it useless for my needs. But, will admit, when I purchase a site, or consider purchaseing a site, a piece of me always makes sure to check Quantcast, Alexa, PR, links in all major engines, Whois, etc... An old habit that is usually a waste of time. I'll take a site on page 1 of G, Y MSN for the keyword "mortgage, with a PR of 0 over a website with a PR 8 on page 20 for the keyword "mortgage" any day...
then what do you say to the link directory that is "spanked" by google for "link reviews". Lord Google needs to leave the little guy like myself so I can continue to market my product to a deserving crowd.
I would say that every back link is useful just that those from DMOZ etc are more useful than others but whatever links from link directories still help in some way or other.
I suggest you only submit to high PR directories. Submitting to low PR directories is not use full. You will not see links from such sites in webmaster tools or yahoo site explorer.
If you are talking about free directory submissions, I disagree with you. Best Results from Free Directory Submissions @mbomb Directory submissions are great for helping you rank for your desired keywords. They may not pass a lot of PR, but directories will certainly help the search engines determine which keywords you should rank for.
Free link directories really works, great, I had done only free directory submissions for a website no more seo than that, still it got 2 pr in next update and rankings on targeted keywords.
Well I have my own opinion on directory submissions. I don't just think they work, I know they work, but only if they're done properly, to the right directories
Well, if that's how you're thinking, then, by all means, keep trying. However, I doubt you'll get far. Dmoz has several PR0 subcategories, I bet you'd jump at the chance to get listed there, though, wouldn't you?
0 PR's subcategory of Dmoz is very good back link, but what about the some other 0 to 1 PR's webdirectory's subcategory pages ? Dmoz've got very good popularity and presently its not easy to get listing in Dmoz. so we need to think about some other quality Directories. only quality and high traffic directories are useful for our website. thanks John
There's no difference, in fact, I've seen several directories with a similar structure, for example, say a construction category, the content on the 'other' directory was much better than that of the dmoz similar category. Oh, and this other directory is owned by another DP member. Popularity? Amongst webmasters, end of story. Follow the guidelines, not difficult. Every crap directory I've come across has claimed to be a 'free quality web directory', or other variations of 'quality directory'. Home users don't use directories, they use search engines. If you don't agree with that, it proves how fickle directory owners can be. Any more?
