DP Forum Sigs - Link Juice

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by PlateFish, Apr 16, 2008.

I see posters here with 10,000 posts etc meaning they will have 10,000 backlinks to the sites that they are promoting.

I have been told that the links just cancel each other out, once google has crawled DP it won't register anymore of your links in your sig.

What's the truth about backlinks in your signiture here on DP?

    Answers are very much appreciated.

    Thanks. :)

Every page on every site has link juice, however it can be so small that hundreds or even thousands of links have minimal effect. The page for this thread has a page rank of zero so it doesn't pass much link juice at all. The backlinks are best used for getting new sites indexed.

having a sig link with someone with 10 000 posts is 10 000x better than someone with 1. Just think about it in that context.

So you're saying that an increase in 1 link gives you a contant increase in link juice.

I want to know if anyone can actually quanitfy the amount of link juice that 10,000 backlinks on DP would give.

I'm sure over time that the PR of certain threads will increase and therefore you will get good backlinks from your sigs?

I think the link juice rapidly diminishes the more links you get from the same site. I recently lost several thousand links from a site wide link to one of my sites and I haven't seen any drop in SERPs (yet).

it also depends on how high the PR is of forum threads where your posts are made.

Wont the PR of all the forum threads increase over time? So sig link building is sort of like an investment? Maybe? I guess posting in very popular topics might be worth while doing then?

If you check the PR of the profile page of constant posters here (2000+) , they often ( the profile page ) have a PR of 3 , you can also see backlinks in Google going to that page itself . the other thing about DP is it allows the link juice to go to its member sites via signatures to a very generous manner ( other forums cap this for different reasons ) You will also find backlinks in Google coming from DP going to signature links as well , so yes there is some benefit. You would need to post quite regularly to keep the flow however , otherwise your links will become buried over time.

I'm also interested in the quantified impact of forum sigs on PR. It'd be nice to see a definitive answer on this somewhere, as the question has popped up several times, although everyone seems to have their own opinion on it.

In theory, if the PR of a given thread increases, then the links that big G pulls from that thread (i.e. sig links) would carry greater link juice. But as someone already mentioned, the majority of threads seem to be destined for mediocrity at PR 0.

Thus, in my totally unqualified opinion, it seems to me that the best way to get Link juice from forum sigs would be to post on a thread that gets external links from other sites, thus increasing the thread's PR, which is then passed on to the sig links. If this is true, then one's best bet at getting PR from sig links is to write quality posts and hope for lazy bloggers and/or webmasters to link to the contents of the thread rather than paraphrasing and/or plagiarizing it on their own sites.

Hmm. If you could stumble and social bookmark threads here I'm sure the PR of a lot of threads would rapidly increase resulting in fairly decent quality sig backlinks. SHAME!

I can see what sleuth1 means. If you have a lot of posts your profile page will get a lot more hits and therefore the link on your profile page will actually be fairly high quality.

All the pages on this forum have a lot of outgoing links. So I don't think google gives much credit to these links. Links on dp are great to get your site/blog indexed.

I don't think this is true. I think posts that are old become less valuable over time. So a newbie poster with 30 fairly recent hot topics will probably get more benefit than someone with 5000 posts from long forgotten old topics. Its not simply about the numbers its about the quality. Also forums with new posts are spidered more frequently.

I think google does not place any value on signature links anymore. If they do it is so low it would take thousands of links to equal one link from a pr 3 site

There was a thread regarding this a little while ago. I cbf finding it. But it was regarding specific thread pages that had some pr juice. These threads were informing threads... As in ones that people would link back to from other sites.

In some cases older threads will get more links to them with time, though. So the PR of a particular thread, and therefore the PR it passes could increase with time. I guess it just depends.

Well, not always free. Many (if not most) DP signatures are rented from other users. ;)

After so many posts, I would think the serp value of sig links would decline. But that's not the only reason. How many sig links are in this thread right now? 30? With that many outbound links, there is not too much juice to pass around...

Even though a sig links serp value can be debated, I have well over 500 backlinks from DP showing up in Webmaster Tools. At least they are counted. :)

I do think that signature links gives you more traffic, which is not paid advertising, but the traffic takes first priority. The weight of a signature link for backlinks/ pageranks ..well I think its slight, but it still counts as a backlink. I mean it can count up :)
