Yes you can, but then whats the use? In due time both will get banned in google for duplicate content. Why not create different sites with different db?

This way he can create a directory network quickly and easily. Nice way to make a few cents on Adsense!

Just the same as a blog network where people sell links on hundreds of blogs that all share the same DB.

Not easy to earn from Adsense if you are putting up link directories, you normally earn from link subscription.

But with respect the OP never said a word about networks or adsense and shouldn't be getting more than the answer he needs plus any advice.

What do you mean 2 too many? if he wants to setup 2 directories hes entitled to.

Yes, he is entitled to it. Doesn't mean he should do it.

IMO, directory networks using the same database are just another reason why Google hates directories, and hence why directories are being undervalued.

 He never said a word here about networks, the guy hasn't even setup anything yet and already your blaming others actions for directories in google.

No, you take full responsibility instead dude and accept that if business is poor and directories dont stand well then thats your sole responsibilty to do something and not anyone elses fault.

I take full responsibilty for mine, if im suffering, its because of me, not anyone else.

One day you will understand that you have to stand on your own two feet in business and ride the waves a bit better.

Seems 2+ directories using the same database is indeed a duplicated, network directory.
Hasn't that already been tried and already is failing? Ie. 'article directories', 'blog directories' and assorted niche directories, where the market is being tapped into by anyone and everyone to make a quick buck or for other sinister reasons?

That's your own personal decision, I, nor anyone else, forces you to make that your decision. At the end of the day, all directories are receiving money somehow, paying for a review is just inciting paid links. We all know that, even you.

I know that. The directories which I do run are a 'for fun' basis. I don't build any of my business on that whatsoever. Where I do focus my attention, however, shows that I, solely, on my own, completely by myself, have taken a stand - the business' books prove that;)

I'm not here to cause the waves, I'm here to break the wake, so to speak;)

Why else would you want to run 2 directories off the same database other than duplicating a site?

I agree that there are too many of these already. Google has had no trouble spotting these from a mile away.

you can run 2 sites with one db as I had one setup for a client of mine one was English the other was Spanish then he decided to split them into 2 as he decided it was to conflicting with description in English and some in Spanish

My guess is that the original poster is not looking to set-up 2 directories with the same content but just using the same database. Perhaps his hosting service limits the number of databases he can use.

I know that wordpress, for example, will let you configure all tables in a blog with a prefix you specify so that you can host multiple blogs with the same database without the tables conflicting. I believe phpLD has this option as well but I can't remember at the moment.

If you have PHP5, then accomplishing multiple directories running against the same database would be an easy task given you have DBA experience (even minimal). However, you would have to apply some mods over phpLD to ensure your results pages have random link sorting (there is a mod available).

One more item I would recommend is running these sites from multiple IDs rather than one as it would reduce the chance of being banned for duplicate content.

If you are talking about running two separate instances from the same database, this is even easier as the phpLD tables include a prefix which you can change in the scripts themselves.
