i was wondering if there is any benefit to buying a .com over a .net, .org or anything else, or vice versa? also what about more "obscure" ones like .biz, .tv, .tk?
For me it goes: .com .net .org - RARELY. I don't think I own a .org. Other than that... nada. I have 4-5 .tv and 10 or so .ws, but I consider them novelty domains. For SEO, tld doesn't matter. For branding a website where people will remember the site, .com works the best. I also consider .net to be memorable as well, but .com over .net.
In the early days of domains, .com was typically used for commercial businesses, .net was typically for internet service providers and .org was primarily for non-profit organizations. Anymore, you can use them for just about anything, so there's really no advantage of having one over another. But like Fka200 said, .com works the best for website branding and is the most common tld people go for.
Are you talking about in terms of resale value? If so, .com is king & worth the most. Then would be .net which is generally worth somewhere around 10% of the value of the .com .org - some people love these, personally, I'm not too big of a fan .biz - not great .tv - it's NOT a novelty extention, it's growing quite quickly & I predict this will be one of the top extentions in a few years as well. .tk - a free crappy extention that is just crap
So it sounds like .com and .net are the best? The name I wanted was 5am.net, it's for a college themed blog and I came up with 5am because it's really short, easy to remember, and it represents students staying up late studying. But .net and all the "normal" TLD's were taken so I was gonna go for the .tk. If I got it through .tk it'd be $1000 because they charge for 3 character domains. Do you think a lot of people already don't like .tk's and even if I paid for it do you think it would result in less traffic?
Main thing is site content and ur plan, TLD does not cery in lots case. for even website resell value if ur site have alexa rank 20k bt its address is something.eu, it will be still worthy and ppl will buy without considering TLD.
For me the preference is: .com .net .info and etc Personally I don't like .org most and I would rather to get .info most of the time.
for me .com , .net or some european extensions, i don't like .info , is not a "proffesional" domain , .info is like a free domain
I'm mainly looking at how it would affect traffic, if people would see a TLD that isn't .com or .net and it would turn them away
never used anything but a .com - everything else is second rate. I only get .net, .org etc. to stop people buying the same versions of my domains with those extentions.
It's gonna be for a blog. So .com is definitely better? Is it just that it's more recognizable so it will get more traffic or what?
