Ubuntu is extremely user friendly, any one who formerly used windows shouldn't have a problem with basic stuff, and if you're not doing basic stuff you need Linux anyways because, from my experience, windows isn't the load king. Updates are quick and painless(compared to windows), it has FireFox(reliable and quick), Kopete IM(you can set up an account with 10 or more different services incl Yahoo, IRC and MSN), it has a e-mail client(if you use that stuff), theres a program for opening your word docs. You have pretty much every thing, and for anything extra, theres wine. Theres tones of open source free soft ware that works better than most windows software. If installing software is a pain for you, than ask a friend. In Ubuntu, the add/remove programs are very simple and easy to use. If you want to install any extra software though(1/10 most people would) than it might take some getting used to. AND, for the gaming community OpenGL is becoming bigger and better than anything windows has to offer. My buddy plays high end grafics windows games on Gentoo and it runs faster and better. As for the family van, it breaks down too much, I think the family needs a more reliable and safer vehicle, like the GNU SUV But if you can't handle an SUV a broken down van might be the best thing, as long as you know how to keep it running It's a free country so use what ever the hell you please, I just think people should open there eyes and their minds and weigh the benefits of both Linux and windows. Me, I hate windows, I'm doing as much as I can to get away from it. I'm using Ubuntu, and computers never felt so good. Here is my opinion: windows: Quick use Linux: Heavy duty my $0.02, more power to you
Over the weekend, I had to buy my wife a notebook. She does the accounting for my business but wanted to become more mobile. She needs Windows because she uses Quickbooks and that only runs on Windows. So, I turned it on and tinkered with it this morning for about a half hour. The thing runs like a tank. My two sons have Vista. One on a better notebook than my wife's and I haven't noticed anything wrong with it though he's away at school and I don't get to play with it. My other son just finished building a super mega-blaster gaming machine and nothing runs slow on that. I hesitate to uninstall anything because I'm not sure if I'll lose any functionality. Some things have been renamed since XP so it takes a while to figure out where things are. Some items are grouped under categories that are a little abstract making me feel like they are hidden. I'm also unsure what I can turn off. This thing has Table PC turned on but why? I was going to turn it off but the popup makes me feel I'll lose more than just the tablet software. I finally was able to get the web cam to run but how do I stream it to the internet? I've never done this but I'm guessing I need some app. It just runs too slow. I have a FreeBSD box with a PIII and 256MB ram that runs better than this, at least the window manager and browser/editor/etc. Like I said, it was just a half hour of tinkering and I need my wife to be here so I can find out what she wants to keep or lose. But all these constant popups and window zooming are driving me crazy.
I like the quirkiness of Linux, but I've never actually used it. I like the look of it though. Will probably check it out on my new laptop.
Linux is only great for one thing. Servers and of course less bugs. Other than that Vista beats it in all respects.
not to bash your post just wanted to point out that with the new fedora and new ubuntu as well as all the other distros no learning or tech language is required, simple point and click, and you still have the options to open up the console go into the back end and do work yourself(for more manual and precise/customized work) but its 100% user friendly no need to learn. as for windows programs, double click it and it runs, thanx to the preinstalled windows emulator.
please point out 1 thing vista has that linux doesnt, let alone 1 thing vista can do better then linux? and NO saying vista has a much larger community of viruses and worms wont win you the arguement. Not alot of people like the whole infected scene.
i use XP and tried to use Ubuntu, there are two reason why i go back to XP laptop wireless is shaky. hard to (some time impossible) to connect dual monitor is hard to config until they fix these two i can't use Ubuntu
been fixed already laptop wireless is excellent im actually using a wireless laptop now plus i have desktops wirelessly connected, ive used it on ubuntu worked good but now im on fedora, make sure it wasnt ur wireless card/adapter never tried dual monitor but my friend has a dual monitor set up on fedora, and he used to use SuSE which he had dual monitor also, never tried ubuntu tho. If you need help pm me ill help you get set up.
when i buyed my pc it had linux installed..linux is good..but not good like windows..it's hard to use ...vista 4 me
I'd choose linux over XP, though. Linux, especially Ubuntu, is not hard to use - that's just lame talk (and myths)! I think 90% of people who voted for Vista never even tried linux
if you wanna create server you should use linux.....because vista don't consult with the solve......i use linux because it is free))
i just spend 20 minute trying to figure out how to connect my bluetooth wireless keyboard, mouse and headphone to my laptop. and it is going to take me a long while to get all three to work where as windows, all you have to do is install driver i might sound stupid, but i don't have time to figure it out
Completely and entirely untrue. Linux is inherently more secure for the simple fact that its architecture is much much better. Linux is used very widely as a server, and there definitely is money to be stolen from servers (credit card databases, personal information . . . etc). Just some food for thought Also, many more updates are available through linux than there are have been on windows. You tried Ubunut or Linux Mint? I haven't had any problems with drivers; I plug something in and it just works. Simple as that. Now, Slackware, that's a different story . . . but much smaller and customizable installs If anyone wants to give Linux a go, shoot me a PM and i'll help set you up
I have never tried Linux. And I have Vista. It works fine, but there are few problems time to time. So I vote for Vista.
I agree. Ubuntu and the other distros I've used are far better than any of the windows os's. I think Linux has a great developers environment and I also think it's becoming easier for people who don't want a nightmare fooling around with command line I use command line quite a lot because of the large rang of options, some graphic interface programs don't include all of the functionality. However, up with Linux, down with microsoft, it's monopoly, and vista, may they die a long slow painful death Linux is like a drug, and I'm going to over dose every time.
