CONTENT based websites? has anyone tried making these? ---

hey guys im new to building websites/e-commerce/internet business/etc. and i have barely any idea what im doing right now, but trying out something like this sounds like a lot of fun - i have spare time on my hands (hours of surfing the net and playing smash brawl everyday lol), so im willing to sacrifice a chunk of my time to do this, so i thought i would give it a try -

anyways, sorry if this questions been asked a million times before but: looking through the overall basic startup website a person with extra time could do, i thought i would start with a content based website (it appears to be the easiest to start/maintain/update imo). im not sure what topic it would be about, but the basic idea is to choose a niche topic, and pool a bunch of articles/videos/info/pictures/etc. from other websites into your website right? (while gaining passive profit from affiliate marketing/ads/etc)... well, i thought that was the general idea, but im curious to know the legal implications of doing this. i will not be creating new content. i will merely be collecting content from around the web (ANYWHERE on the web is a possible grab and collect content area: articles from newyorktimes, reviews from gamespot, blog articles, wallpaper sites, etc.) , and pooling it together into a (hopefully) easier to read/look at content based website on that one specific topic.

... is this something that is O.K. to do? if its not, what are the limitations, and what can i do to basically not get into any trouble, while having a website that is similar to what im describing?

/\ the above is the general gist of what i wanted to do. its something i wrote on another business forum - anyways, yes, from a quick google search, ive discovered that i would probably end up in deep **** if i had followed through with what i just described. this just makes things more complicated than i had originally thought.

so basically i was wondering if anyone has tried making a content website, and how they started it going. Im interested in 2D art/classic rpg gaming/philosophy so im hoping to build a site around one of those topics (except much more specific) - but if i cant pool information like i had originally intended, then what can i... pool to create my content? i mean, places like digg, gamerankings, fark (just off the top of my head, and yes i know they are not the best examples to give) feature content from external sites but they dont appear to be getting sued/attacked or anything. if you guys have any content based websites that you've built, along the lines of what ive described, could i possibly take a look at them to see the general gist of how i should be modeling my site? since i literally know jack squat about this at the moment, ANY input would be a great help - thanks

hey rex....in m honest opinion, its always better to have 3-4 Original Unique Content posts on ur site/blog rather than a million non-unique content from other sites. And yes, u might end in deep **** later on. At first, you might feel let down that your original content is not doing well but you need to have 3 things with if you want a site which are Time, Patience and Hardwork. Feel free to pm me or add me on msn...

My sites are mentioned in my sig....Cheers

Re write the articles, put them together in an easier fashion for people and also give a backlink even if its on a link page saying this article was based on 1 by whoever it was made by. Its plagiarism if you just copy where as if you give credit its fine (thats what i was told in college)

Not really sure about the advice given around here. Google itself is just a big scraper site and has no original content of it's own. I've got 15k pages indexed with 1000-1500 unique visitors from google SERPs per day. That's one of my sites with absolutely 0 original content ... so again, not really sure.

Straight copies, sure! Don't just copy the source and post it on your site ... that's the definition of duplicate content. But taking bits and pieces from a few pages ............. it wouldn't hurt for you to try it now would it?

Yes I make most of my income from high quality content based websites - but its all about adding value and mixing that with great promotion tactics.

Wrong - firstly the Search mostly ignore duplicate content, secondly the sort of content that you can republish for free is usually low quality and does not add a lot of value so people have no reasons to visit or link to your site (and the SEs won't think much of your site either as a result).

There is great content out there that you can republish if you look hard enough but there is rarely enough of it around to make a full site from - you need to have a good proportion of your own high quality content.
