What is the point of PROXY Hosting??

We have had many people wanting to host proxy servers with us.
We have always said no to this hosting as we just can't see the point in it?
Can anybody please explain to me the point of PROXY servers?

The way I see it is this:

BUT I don't see why someone would want to pay us to cache on our servers?

think only to this , proxies are built to use the server as intermediary between the client ( user who surf the web ) and the website ( the client wants to access ) but he can't because the website is blocked by the filters from institutions

    people make proxies for money

But surely if the website is blocked by a company or institution, then surely so is the proxy facility? And how do they make money - Advertising?

proxies are blocked in a matter of minutes by some filters ( if the sites have keywords like "proxy", "bypass" ) or weeks ( if the content , keywords are hidden ) and people make money untill their proxies are blocked with Adsense on the main page or CPM networks like Adbrite , Adversal on proxified pages

Hi, mostly kids (well not all) use proxy sites it blocks their ip and uses your server as the ip address. So when a school (or work) blocks myspace, youtube, and what ever else, they can still get into myspace and what not through a proxy site. It unblocks or unlocks sites that are blocked.

People make money on proxys from the Google absence after advertising it. Be very care full if you start allowing proxys. They are very server resources extensive. We have a different server for our proxy sites,

I also don't allow anyone to host proxy sites on our servers because as someone as said, they use to much resources.

I'd say the OP (and most other posters in here) are confusing terms. A proxy server provides an IP address and port like (43.55.34.100:8080) which has usually been opened up with malicious intent or just sloppy administration. These open proxy servers are used for many (usually bad) purposes and normally without the knowledge of the host machine.

Proxy websites are the legitimate web-based versions of this service. They can be set up on most hosting services and allow people to bypass content filtering. As already noted, they are quite resource intensive and I would not recommend allowing them on anything less than a dedicated server. They are legal however and there is an emerging market in this niche. Check out my latest blog post at Proxy Builder for more info, here is a demo of a Proxy Website.

i was talking about web based proxies too , proxy ( websites ) using scripts like phproxy , glype , surrogafier, cgi proxy , i don't think this scripts are dangerous but is true , the proxies use huge resources , 2-5 good proxies can crush a 2GB dual core server...

Its the new way to make money.. Kids want them so they can access myspace and stuff while at school. Others use them and want them so they can view porn and what not. And of course you do get the ones that want to block their ip address to do illegal stuff or so they can registrar a new account on dp after they scammed everyone here.

their are some proxy networks that make 100 a day, I have a couple of clients that have their net works making 50-100 per day on google adsence, times that by 30 days a month not a bad way to make some money.. I just wish mine were doing s good LOL

Proxies are not all that resource intensive. You guys want to know what is resource intensive?

Start in the game hosting business, you would only be able to host 50 / 100 players on a dual core machine with 4gb ram.
While on that same server a proxy site could run with 1000s of visitors per HOUR.

It's all about trading people, if you allow proxy sites, ask a decent price for it.

I still dont think this is worth inconveniencing our members for. The revenue available for these proxy hosts is just not comparable to a regular income from a host or reseller.

    Any other opinions?

I do not put my proxy sites on the regular hosting servers.. I have an unmetered BW server for this.. Let me give you an example for a regular shared hosting account I get about 3.99 on average a month for a proxy hosting account I get on average 14.99 to 22.99 a month.. so just a few proxys accounts cover the cost of my server..
