A hat company has broken a German taboo by advertising its products using an image of Adolf Hitler.

The campaign for the Hut Weber company places the iconic hair and moustache of the Nazi leader next to a bowler-hatted sketch of Charlie Chaplin, star of The Great Dictator, with the caption in English: "It's the hat."

Created by the Serviceplan agency, the advertisement is groundbreaking because the taboo of using Hitler in any other context but a historical one would have been unthinkable until now.

The advertisement has generated controversy although many young people writing in internet forums have expressed their approval.

Germany has taken great steps in the past to ensure Hitler-related material does not go on sale in the country.

Two years ago it sought the help of the Italian government in stopping the importation of "Hitler Wine", which featured a picture of the dictator giving his infamous salute.

Using "forbidden" symbols brings controversy, attention, bans and sales to associated products.

There is no benefit to hitler or the nazi party.

What's wrong with using his hair and mustache? They are giving good message-wearing their hats can turn Hitler like people into Charlie Chaplin type people.I don't think they are promoting nazism or any facist idea.I liked the idea of this advertisement.

    Probably not.

Am i the only one who see's the difference between celebrating Hitler and using his image to make a point? The advert is saying "look at the difference a hat makes... We sell hats, Come buy one!".

They also have the people taking offence to it dancing like puppets. Do you think they used the image of Hitler thinking "man i hope this ad campaign doesn't receive a lot of media attention"?

I wonder what the people who follow the Judaic religioun think of this?

Hold on, If Jews are supposed to be "White people, just with a different RELIGIOUN (e.t. islam, bhudism. etc.), then why did hitler kill them on the grounds of race. I dont see the difference between some Jewish people and some german people, infact some look more european than hitler did?

Will you make a protest all around the world and burn flags :D

Anyways, I'm waiting for someone with balls to brake the Mohammad taboo, now that would be a person I would consider a freedom of speech fighter.

That would never happen, also there is a difference in using Hitler and celebrating Hitler! These T-Shirts celebrate Hitler and that would never happen in Germany.
Things like that are prohibit by law in Germany!
