Hi guy's XP help.

Hi guys,
I know this probably isn't the best forum for this kind of question but i spend a lot of time here and i thought someone might know.
I need to expand my C drive (boot partition) i have the unalocated space but i have been told that you can't expand a boot volume, but does anyone know a way or some software that might help. I know its a long shot but it will save me loads of time in the long run.

 

Your issue is just one reason partitions suck.....

My advice......purchase or "borrow" another hard drive.....Ghost the entire current boot partition to the new drive.....problem solved.

In my opinion, no need to have another partition unless you know upfront that you are going to need a dual boot configuration (XP on one, Vista on the other)

If you have the unallocated space on the hard drive, I don't see why you couldn't allocate it to the NTFS partition. I used to have XP and Kubuntu on the same hard drive, wiped Kubuntu, and reallocated the empty space back to the XP partition without any problems (of course I made sure that I had a backup of the XP partition in case something went wrong). Best software to use when working with partitions in my opinion is GParted. It makes partitioning drives (even deleting partitions) a heck of a lot easier.

 

Yes mikey, you are very correct Use partition magic, you can resize your partition without any problem. You can download the Windows one or the MS-Dos one, AFAIK only the MS-Dos one is free.

 

Thanks i think i'll do this. I just need to find a copy of ghost, but i'm sure i get one from somewhere.

 

Yeah, I believe partition magic will do the trick but "just in case", make sure data is backed up.

I've ghosted plenty of hard drives for people that needed more space or who also had those 2nd partitions from store-bought PCs like Dell or HP. Of course, those partitions are used to recover the PC...so its best not to delete them unless you know what you are doing.

 

It's mainly for diagnostics, I think. So yeah, part of recovery lmao.

I use GParted to create and resize partitions and PartImage to save an image of my bootable drive. I like to keep a fresh install of my C: drive backed up with most of my programs already installed on it so if something goes wrong I can just restore that image to the C: partition. I back up all my important files to a secondary disc daily.

 

There are third party solutions like "partition magic". You can make this easily

 

I found this great fix for all my XP woes!
What I did was opened the window, and launched my XP os laptop right out of said window, then I went to the Apple shop and bought a MAC, peaceful sleep incurred there after.

 

ctrl panel> administrative tools > computer management > storage
I think there as one option there

 

The problem i have is that it is the boot partition. XP doesn't allow you to extend this partition.

this would be the method Iw ould use as well. I never use partition magic but I thought it could solve your problem but I'm not sure about the data inside.
