Should I become a Police Officer

Hello, fellow members of DP. I come here needing advice. I'm thinking of becoming a police officer only a volunteer one in Britain. I get free travel in London if I do so but have to give 8 hours every two weeks. As well as months of training (every sunday) . I've been accepted onto the first day assessment and I'm having second thoughts. I have a lot on my plate at the moment and really want to increase my online presense and develop loads of new websites after my exams in the summer.

Should I go proceed? Any advice would be priceless!

My advice would be to go for it if it is something that you really want to do. Don't do it because others want you to. You should get into a career that you will feel comfortable with and will enjoy doing. Good luck! :D

Dangerous job but it’s also a much respected job.

With great power comes even greater responsibility

I think you should proceed but only if you have interest in being a police officer.

Police risk their lives daily to keep us safe from criminals and thieves!

We could use some policing around here in the digital point forums hahaha

Anyways I guess the respect is on an individual basis!

As in one will say with no respect and other will say with much respect.

I’m from Canada and we respect our police officers!

Police write tickets because people speed in rural area's and kill children from driving to fast!

There's always a reason for everything!

You must be young I had this same attitude when I was young. I’m not going to sit here and argue about how cops are idiot donut eaters that give tickets!

You have your opinion maybe someday it will change... maybe not :)

It's not up to us, it's up to you, a lot of us may say no but your heart is saying yes. I'd do what you want to do, if you feel you are ready go for it.

Wish you every luck, I'm sure you'd make a good one! :)

If I'm not wrong don't u live in India?
Being a Police officer is definitely a respectful job abroad but I don't think it is in India...
80% of the police officers in India take bribe and most of the people don't have respect for those officers .
I'm Not at all going against you but this is what I think :)

Sure why not as long as you are interested in that position. It can lead to many other things. John

being a police officer is a thankless job, more so in England where you do not carry a firearm so your unable to protect yourself.

what are you going to do, blow your whistle?

It sounds to me as if he wants to become what we term a Special Constable - all the hassle but no pay. Why not just join the regular Met? They're always recruiting and they'll take almost anyone.

Thankfully most British criminals, even in London, don't carry firearms either so the average Bobby on the beat has no need for a sidearm. In fact it's true to say that most UK police officers would not want to carry a firearm as a matter of routine. They have their baton, CS spray and natural powers of persuasion to fend off trouble - it works surprisingly well!

I believe someone starting off in the Met earns around £24k (so around $48k). Police officers, as with all other public workers, receive greater salaries in London than elsewhere in the country.
