i want to do a website though i'm hesitating on the domain name to chose.

let's say my site is about basketball, i'm wondering which name would be the best:
    basketball.org or thebasketball.com

    thanks for your answers.

Well 9 out of 10 times .com domain names are better than a .org. Im sure you can come up with a better name than thebasketball.com unless you are trying to sell basketballs, you just need to look around. If you need any help PM me and let me know exactly what your site is about and I should be able to help you find a decent domain name. John

For that example I'd definately prefer basketball.org over thebasketball.com as basketball.org is worth a ton & thebasketball.com doesn't make sense & is worth a lot less.

Just register both of the names and forward one of them to the other.

Then one of them could get banned from the google engine.

I'm not sure it's a problem (although it may happen). There are lots of big sites doing it.
Also it is mainly for direct navigation (type-in) purposes to redirect names in these cases.

    basketball.org is the best.

basketball.com would be ideal but that is going to cost far too much for any average webmaster, you would need xxx, xxx's to spend i would think.

Pizza.com sold for about $2.6 million as a recent example, basketball wouldn't be too far off.

    thanks for your answers guys.

actually, what i'm looking for is the domain name that will rank the best in google. maybe this topic should be in the SEO forum after all

in my case, both "basketball" and "the+basketball" are requested keywords even if there are more searches for the 1 word request.

to get ranked on google, it doesn;t matter what type of domain you have or what is the domain name.... all it matter is what keywords you are using....

In fact the name does matter but it's just a small % of all of the considered factors.

I've heard that Google "likes" org domains better.
