    It makes you go a bit loopy if you do it too much :)

    No, what it does is create a backlink for you, adding all of those backlinks together they can raise your serps for targetted keywords and phrases, resulting in possible traffic from the search engines.

    links are important for the traffic needs a 'route' or 'path' to reach it's destination.

    Alway link for traffic, never for pagerank.

    You also may get some traffic from the directories but not that much... it is more to just build your backlinks so you get a better SE ranking.
