Did you check the actually pages to see if your links are removed? If not, your links may not be removed, but the search engines may be dropping those pages, which can drop your rankings until the pages are found again.

    no, to be honest...
what i do is that i type in MYSITE.COM on google to see how many results will give....
because mysite has a unqie name 99% of those results are link backs...i don't use LINK: method....

but isn't a little weird that in 3 weeks my links dropped from 5300 to 4700...?!??

mine always fluctuates. But long term its because the search engines are dropping the pages themselves from the index the backlinks were on. Thats what I believe anyways.

My back links also is not stable but when I try to diagnose the links I had, some were removed. To help you with this in analyzing your links and even your competitors link, you can use this tool : www.linkdiagnosis.com You will able to know the link types you have.

Did you manually check your backlinks or by using a tool. Remember that some tool are not accurate.

Go back to few directories where you know you have added your website and check to see if it's still there! One tip: If your site is MFA, google know that and he will drop you slowly

I don't think thats the best way to check your backlinks.

use site:yourdomain but use Yahoo instead of Google

I like this tool here the best

Using that way to search your backlinks isn't the best, and won't be really accurate. I wrote about a bunch of tools on my blog that can be used to check your backlinks and other information:
How To Check How Many Backlinks Your Site Has
How To Check How Many Backlinks Your Site Has - Part 2

Although I don't know why you are losing these "backlinks" but Google de-indexing sites that you had links on is probably one of the main reasons...

Theres tons of better ways to get quality backlinks than submitting to directories.

SERPs, indexed pages, backlinks and domain "reach" will fluctuate all the time. Don't worry about it.

MFA = spam/crap site made for adsense.
