Yes you sure can and if you use a few blackhat techniques ( seeing as how you are a programmer) you can be on your way very fast in the lucrative areas such as finance, health, casino, travel and other areas which are good for affiliates who know how to rank sites. However, for most new affiliates, this will not be the case so you need to know your level in ranking sites and getting traffic. For those of you out there that say black hat techniques don't work, are not good, or will get you banned, well you're not the ones at the top of the SE's for the competitive and lucrative areas as traditional SEO won't get you to rank for the $$ niches.

One thing you must know. About wordpress.com. These blogs do not allow affiliate marketing links, redirects or any other kind of advertising in them. Trust me I know. You can however put a link to your personal website in your bio. I must have posted a affiliate link by accident in one of my post that I grabbed from my articles on my website. My wordpress blog site has been closed. I would suggest blogger.com for your promotion of products. You can put affiliate links there with no problems. Or put some ads in google product search page.
