First post - WOW, huge forum... Anyway, I have multiple websites, some are related to each other and logically link to each other. I was told that, for SEO purposes, I should find ways to make it LOOK as if they're not owned by the same person. I have them on different webhosts. I was told to use different addresses on each site - I believe this was for contact information - but don't see, practically, how to DO that. (I mean, I only live in one city, one state...) Do I even NEED contact info? I'd heard once that Yahoo! wouldn't list a site unless it had legitimate name/snail mail address on it. What other tips do you suggest? Does domain privacy hurt or help me? Thank you! Now I'm gonna go look around a bit...
hide your domain information and not interlink you websites with each others because its not a good practice in SEO and try to use different email addresses its good but not necessary. any one have more tips ??? cheers
I suspect I'm not the only person here with more than 1 website in a particular niche, and who occasionally links pertinent sites/pages to each other. It doesn't seem realistic to me to NEVER interlink my sites with each other - or am I completely missing something here? For example, if I own allaboutcomputers.com, I might also want to develop: allaboutlaptops.com allaboutcomputersoftware.com allaboutcomputerhardware.com and so on. Would be logical for me to write about what I know and could be profitable, too. What strategies can I employ that would allow me to link those sites to each other without being penalized? How do I make it less obvious that they are owned by the same person? Thank you.
If they are related there is no problem at all linking them together. Just make sure each site provides some sort of value to the end-user and you'll be fine. Keeping your WHOIS private is your call, ditto on the separate emails. Do whatever you are comfortable with.
Yes, you need to have valid contact information. Domain privacy can hurt you, especially if your registrar's name appears in the administrative contact field instead of your own - in the event of a dispute, they will be declared the legal owner of the domain name instead of you. You can learn more about domain name issues at www.domainwarning.com See above. Hiding your domain name is a quick and easy way to lose it - permanently. It can be done - if you use rel="nofollow" to tell the search engine spiders not to follow those links. Basically you'll be doing this for the benefit of sending targeted traffic to the site you're linking to while telling the search engine spiders to stay out (from that particular entrance anyway). Well, aside from registering each Web site as a separate business, registering the domain names with the new business as the owner, and then having a Class C IP address for each Web site (good luck justifying those costs), just do what I said earlier and use rel="nofollow" on the links to the other sites. Tell that to Google and the other search engines. Even if the site gets flagged for human review, someone may be in a bad enough mood to consider it a link scheme even if the sites are being linked to benevolently. Hence my reason for using rel="nofollow" on the links. Yes, you won't pass any PageRank to the linked page, but you can send targeted traffic to those sites if it's done properly (i.e. for the benefit of your site's users and visitors instead of your own benefit). And to top it off, you can benefit indirectly as well - again, if done properly.
Dan, I appreciate the comprehensive reply! Sounds like basically you're saying use the rel="nofollow" tag when linking to another site of mine- but otherwise don't hide my name or contact info or anything else. Does that about sum it up, or did I miss something? Want to be completely certain I understand - don't want to assume anything.
Theres no problem owning multiple sites Rankings aren't based on owner of the site Just don't interlink your sites if you host them on same ip
No problem. I've often been told by some people I gave away far too much advice here (over $400,000 and counting so far). But I don't care. And yes, that does pretty much sum it up. Just remember to link to the other site when appropriate, not all the time and all over the place.
Whoever told you is right but honestly, why waste so much time in getting a link from one of your site to other ? it won't carry that much weight anyway, if the site is not good, same owner/not same owner.
I just have a couple of sites that rank really well, and would like to create a couple of related sites and link to 'em. Was thinking I'd create a separate site for the new stuff I want to sell, rather than put it on the high-ranking one, because sometimes I sell sites and it'd be easier if THAT happens if they were separate.
