Changing Category Titles

    Hi,

I have a question about modifying my WP category titles after the
fact. I've just completed building the site's base content and am
at the directory submission stage. Some of my product posts
are indexed but not highly. I wanted to include the plural version
of my keyword in my category since that is what most brand
    & product searches use.

So, for example, instead of using "Coat Brands" and "Coat
Styles" as level 2 categories. I want to change them to "Coats
By Brand" and "Coats by Style" to get the plural keyword "Coats"
in the url. Most of the competing sites have that element in their
url so I want the same advantage.

o Do I risk losing any standing with Google doing this at this stage?
o Do I need to employ any kind of redirect?
o What will become of my currently indexed product posts?
o What will happen to my Google Sitemap?

    Appreciate Any Advice

    George

Just 301 redirect the old URL paths to the new URL paths, you will however see a minor drop in search results, but this is only temporary and experienced by everyone when using 301 redirects. You'll need to rebuild your XML sitemap once your done creating your new internal structure.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I changed the category titles and submitted
permalink 301 redirects using the WP plugin and regenerated my
sitemap. I also understand that WP 2.3 automatically handles the
new url redirection, so hopefully the redundant 301s don't hurt.
For good measure, I made some minor changes to each of the
posts hoping Google would re-crawl them as a result.

I guess, as expected, my post rankings fell off the face of the earth.
    I was wondering:

o How long I should expect it to take for Google to re-index my
    new pages?
o Once a post exists, what event would trigger Google re-indexing
    that page again?
o Did I implement this category/permalink url change properly?

    Many Thanks for the Advice

    George
