I am looking for some ideas of generating more revenue. This time round through a high earning niche type directory. There are a few niche directories that spring to mind that could seriously earn some real cash but not sure if I would like to get involve in an adult related niche directory or go into the gambling side of things. Apart from the above niches, can anybody recommend or know of any other high earning niches for money earning potential directories?
Are you looking at running adsense off these or just pay for having them included? Just got off the phone with a friend who's running adsense on a directory site he's got, he's generating click revenue that I'm envious of. I have to have 10 times the page impressions with some of my niches to even come close to what he's doing. Very specialized niche with his sites ranking 1 through 5 in search engines.
An excellent question. Here are some niche directories. Maybe you can find a niche that is under serviced. You would be surprised though. I found over 85 pet directores
Adsense or similar is always a possibility depending on what type of niche the site is. Thanks for the resource there. Will be looking into some sites further real soon. Anyone had any experience on running a niche directory, typr of work and revenues?
niche directories are tough, it is harder to build backlinks, advertise and get submissions. My oldest (of my new type of portal) niche directories (started back in July of 2007) is Portal4Health.com, it has earned me the most income but a fraction of the booming general directory days of 2005-2008, my newest niche directory is Portal4Fashion.com and it is still under construction. So far the most successful of my niche directories, in order of revenue are: Portal4Health.com Portal4Finance.com Portal4Music.com CLRD.ca (law) Toronto-Real-Estate-Agents.com Portal4Travel.com Portal4Directories.com Portal4Fashion.com Portal4Canada.com I should give a worthy mention to WRdir.com a webmaster directory I started around 2 years ago, I don't own it anymore but it did very well back in the boom days. I also currently run DirectoryOfFun.com but it is just a directory with no extra content. I have two more to launch, Portal4Shopping.com and Portal4Teens.com - I will probably stop there.
Top Earning niche type for sure is Gambling/Online Casino. Here apart from link you also get decent traffic and affiliate sales. - Note: Above idea not from personal experience but seeing a 3rd party clients website and handling things for him.
Real estate - yes - a very big budget industry Webmaster - no - webmasters tend to be rather stingy and i've seen quite a decline in submission (obviously PR obsession due to the specific niche)
Real estate ftw Gaming is nice though limited. But sometimes there can be surprises, I had a bulk submission of 3 gaming sites in one day from different buyers each valuing 12.95$. That's not much but it is enough for a directory for one day
regional directories could earn money also.Specific if you make for your own region Also travel directories can have great potencial imo
the best adsense earnings are from US based personal injury lawyers. but overall earnings I think favor the health and weight loss sites, while the adsense or other affiliate payouts are not so high due to intense competition amongst publishers, the consumer or visitor rate is increasing every day. I have noticed a exponential growth in my revenue from my directory since it relaunch, though still not earning anything note worthy I see the potential for much much more there
Vertical search hmmmm, this is where domain expertise is really useful, but many webmasters don't know squat about the niche they are about to enter, and therefore have no business offering such services. I suggest working in the industry first, before setting up a directory. Suddenly deciding to be an entrepruneur, is difficult and without an original idea, it's pointless bothering. I've been there and done it - it's really not that fun when you find out that so many won't buy your sponsored adverts - just becuase you send them an email. So even with a great niche idea, it's still too difficult an area to win marketshare. So many things will go wrong, trust me when I say you will have problems with designers, unforseen costs will appear out of nowhere, things will go wrong, prospects will hurl abuse at you, swear at you, even threaten you. You will be hassled by sales people, call centre staff and stupid partnerships which turn out to be nothing more than damn affiliate schemes. Equipment will go wrong eg: computers, web connection, viruses, spam etc etc, and that's just from running a low traffic, low profit webmaster effort - you just wait until you scale this out or try serving real advertisers, then you'll find out about why you need domain expertise. So are you sure you want to enter this wonderful easy life, where the money just flows in with no effort at all. Let me tell you, it's no easy street way to make money. You cannot just do this, unless you have expertise in the actual industry, a perfect idea, a great gimmick, and a viral system in place. That's just for starters, oh and you have to get it filled with at least 7'000 sites too, before promoting it. Many speak of using Adsense. Now this is risky for one main reason - it spells fraudulent clicking and is open to abuse like there's no tomorrow, and I feel adsense can make a good directory look amateurish and desperate for money, even make an entrepruneur look like a scammer - so it's risky. Besides monetisation, it's so tough to make any profit in pre-launch or early launch stage, simply because nobody knows about it yet. I suppose endlessly chasing links may help, but this will so eat into your time, and likely won't produce the results you were hoping for. And this is only the start-up stage you are in!
As someone else mentioned in another thread, since there are really no 'original' niches then nobody should start a new site by your standards. Anyways as seen in the quote above, I think you might be jaded by your own failure. Suck-it-up and try again is my advice. Don't be all doom-and-gloom. good luck
The idea must be original. So that means you have to think about a good business idea. Many get even that totally wrong, it's true. Got nothing to be gloomy about, just warning about the many pitfalls to new directory owners who think this is easy. Nobody will tell you how to do this or give you a business on a plate, you have to dream up the ideas yourself, that's what being a Entrepruneur is all about.
So very true, well said! Just because it has been done before doesn't mean you cant take that and ad your own unique spin to it. I think that there are a bunch of people that see something succeed and subsequently try and replicate that success. IMO forget replication and go with what you know!
Agreed. A niche is similar to a restaurant. Most than one Chinese restaurant can do well in New York city.
