Does anyone know where I can pay to get my site listed in DMOZ? Is this even possible? I know a lot of other big directories charge for submissions (For exmaple Yahoo $300).

Due to all of the DMOZ corruption stories, I would think there is someone out there selling links.

No, from what I read, no way such things are done, although I would rather they introduce a pay per list service rather than keep us waiting.

From what I have read, it seems there are few editors who do this, however this surely isn’t the norm.

maybe if you know the right person...but I doubt. Anyway...nobody will recomend something like this on a public forum. So the thread has no result for you.

PS: stop wasting time on DMOZ & get a life :)

OK, PM me if you're an editor and interested.

I assume some of the previous posters would also like a PM.

I'm an editor, go ahead and try to pay me and see what happens to your site, :D.

    http://www.dmoz.org/help/become.html#compensation

    To answer the OP:
No, there is no legal way of paying for inclusion, and if caught doing it, your site will be banned and the abusive editor will be removed. I wouldn't recommend trying it, :).

I'm willing to bet if you give your site to anyone in PM it'll not get listed ~ ever.

Finding an editor to take your information is easy, and will result in being banned.

Finding an editor willing to take your money, then ban you, a bit harder.

Finding an editor to list your site after you publicly asked to list your site for payment and getting a listing for their asking price, the hardest...

You may however, find an "seo expert" or a professional link builder that can get you a listing, but not specifically a DMOZ listing, as asking for that may raise too many flags... of course, not asking may mean you don't get a listing.

Confused? Good... that is seemingly how it works when dealing with money & the ODP.

Your best bet is to submit & forget. if you get listed it's free, if you don't get listed join the millions. Your money is better spent at other directories or using it for other means of promotion.

This sounds like a threat? Do you plan to do something harmful to me?

But anyway, here's a quick analysis:

Scenario #1: You pay someone off and you get penalized by dmoz.
End result: You never get in.

Next scenario: You do it the right way.
End result: You never get it.

Not sure I see the point except that the end result is the same. Only exception being that I lose money in the first scenario.

IMHO I don't think this is a threat, you are proposing something that is unethical. You will definitely be penalized in more severe way if you try bribing them to list you.

I applaud DMOZ for such a response though it would be better to post what is their official response rather than letting them guess.

LOL... I'm a Dmoz ex Carl, so I can assure you I can't (for better or worse) touch your submission... but if I can venture a thought it IS kinda hard to justify getting hot at their reply since ya did sorta call 'em "corrupt" right up front.:)

ODP has its good n bad points, it's a overall a very good directory. Those "corruption" rumors you've heard are pretty much over-reported even in the few instances where true, they really do take a hard line against that. Having someone wave you off the track that leads to a site ban isn't bad. The only problems with getting a listing in there for a good site are structural, not some nefarious plot.

Though it is a huge directory, it has been built over the course of 10 years by a revolving door of people. There are never that darn many at one time (I suspect something to do with staff hygeine, but I'm not sure), and since it is a freebie submission a good number of those are either buried in spam or engaged keeping it out. Hard for 'em to find the diamonds in the muck, and there's a lotta muck per man. Just the way it is.

As they're manned by volunteers they really are not in a position to promise to review something in a timely manner, so they don't pretend they can. In some areas they're handled quickly, in some it's hit or miss, in some it is unlikely. Nature of the setup. With Dmoz you basically deal with it as it is... you may get in, you may not, but it is a nice bonus if you do and it costs you nothing.

In the time you could spend plotting blackhat entry into there you could do a hundred more productive things to promote your site that *won't* automatically get you banned at dmoz while it is waiting for review... so submit it and move on with other site promotion.

No gain in giving them a hard time or suggesting they're corrupt, it is what it is, and even if it has some issues it's a good directory to get into. Submit and give it a shot, but no one directory makes or breaks a site. Good luck with it.:)

[ok, counter is restarted... I got bored and stopped by. Hi all!]

There's a big difference between a threat and a very likely promise.

If you can't take blunt honesty, then don't post blunt questions, :D.

Rob covered everything very nicely, and he is the king of blunt. Why do we keep putting up with this crap, Rob, it ain't like we don't have better things to do with our time Bro. ;)

You can pay and get in the DMOZ. There are editors out there and also companies the offer services. pay upfront etc and if not then they pay your money back. i have used them for a couple of domains.

The problem with DMOZ is that you never get any feedback on site submission anyhow.

I tried to get listed under this directory:
    http://www.dmoz.org/Recreation/Travel/Travelogues/Around_the_World/

If you look, you'll see almost all the sites are from the late 90s, early 2000s. A few are 3 years old.

I did a check on every single on of the 117 sites in the list. 20 no longer exist, and about 60% have been abandoned. Of those which have been updated in the last 2 years, about 90% of those have nothing to do with the category anymore.

I offered to volunteer to clean up the category but they said it was too big (117) to let someone new edit. Of course, the only reason it has 117 is because no one is cleaning it up and removing sites which no longer exist.

So, no one is editing the category and they will not let anyone new edit the category because the category is too big, but the only reason it is too big is because no one is editing the category.

    Got that?

There are SEO's you can pay to submit your sites to various directories and search engines, which is perfectly legit. Any guarantees they give you are based on the average success they've had over the years in sites being accepted, not that they listed them, themselves.

Some SEOs are ODP editors, and many editors are webmasters. They have to walk a very fine line between their SEO duties and their editing activities. They do not have a free hand to do whatever they want to, but, they do have the advantage of being able to see the status of a site from the inside, and the advantage of being able to understand and write ODP compliant titles/descriptions, and what categories to submit the site to.

Any editor, SEO/webmaster or not, can legitimately submit a site for consideration from their dashboards. What they cannot do is show any favoritism to the site or request that another editor review it. It waits right along with every other site that's there. Anything more could be considered editor abuse and cause for removal. (possibly including the sites that were added). An investigation would determine that.

So yes, it's perfectly legitimate for an SEO or a webmaster in RL to charge for those normal SEO or webmaster services, just like a plumber or doctor charges for his services, but if they go beyond that and show favoritism, then they've stepped over that fine line, so they need to watch it, because others certainly will be. :D Either our own security, other webmasters who DO play by the rules, or the general public.

It is ok to submit a site, just like any other editor or the public can submit a site, BUT,
it is NOT ok to actually list a site for payment, that IS editor abuse, and will be dealt with quickly and severely, period.

Oh well, looks like my initial question was answered.

Obviously the answer is NO. I presumed it may be a possibility since many other dirs offer paid submissions.

With all the accusations of editor misconduct that we hear, I sometimes over react, it's a touchy subject because we hate such editors ourselves, when it happens. I apologize for being rude. :)
