Downtime

My account with hostgator just got suspended (30 mins ago) and as a result my sites aren't working.

I'm waiting for their reply as we speak but after how much downtime would my SERPs start to drop? :(:(

This really sucks as it's not my fault whatsoever - apparently on my sites used over 25% CPU power of the server HOW ?!?!

Did anyone have this problem with hostgator before?

Shared hosting doesn't like websites that use lots of server resources, popular sites running resource demanding scripts are usually the cause. You'll need to upgrade to a dedicated server most likely or they won't re-instate your account. If the downtime is minor you won't see any changes in search results, but if GoogleBot comes by multiple times and your site is still down it might start de-indexing your web pages.

That royally sucks. I've just ordered a dedicated server from hostgator but it will take 48h for it to be installed!

Can I decrease the crawling rate of the Googlebot in webmaster tool to minimize this damage?

    What's considered as minor?

Anyway, I don't understand these people. They say you have all that crap 6k GB bandwidth and 600GB storage. Now today I got 18k visitors to one of my website but how the hell can it exceed 25% of the total CPU power of the server?? Unless it's an Acorn I don't see how that was possible. There were days when I got 26k and that didn't happen!

18k visitors in a day will go over the 25%cpu usage on any server, you made the right move to get a dedicated server. It sounds like your sites need it.

    it's not?

did you know that the more visitors you have, the more memory and cpu a site uses?

i once had 16k in a day on their shared.only half of them went to the website because of sql connections.

i wouldn't worry about getting deindexed.

You would need to be down for days / months to start getting deindexed. Also what type of site is it, a site like a proxy can use a lot of server resources with just a couple hundred visitors

Well anyway, now 48h wait time with no revenue. . . and a night wasted on sorting out this.

By the way, whatever you do don't phone hostgator CS, they are far far more incompetent than on live chat or maybe I've just come across the wrong guy. He took 10 minutes to find my account!

And the reason i said it's not my fault is.. because how am I meant to know this would exceed 25% CPU? I said there were days when I got almost double that. I didn't even get an e-mail before suspending the account.

My site was just starting to climb on first page.. now I don't know what will happen. I've decreased the crawl rate to slow under webmaster tools hopefully it will help a little.

EDIT: It's not a proxy.. it's a simple WP blog - with.. a few images on it I guess :p.

i've been suspended by them twice.
both times my sites could have back online right after talking with them, but instead i spent 12 hours talking back and forth with them.

at least my sites were back up the same day.

I once had a down time for my site that was ranking 1st in google for many keywords.

The down time was a little more than 48 hours. After that, I lost all my ranking in search results. Its been 4 months now, and I am still on the last page of search results instead of 1st place :(

Well I just talked to them again after buying the dedicated server and it seems it exceeded by far more than 25% CPU power.

I've asked them if someone may have hacked into the server or into my account in particular to cause this. Anyone knowledgeable enough to know if this may have been possible?

    Oh angilina,
It's really bad. This much time you need to wait and still not coming on higher SERP's.

It is hard to say with out seeing the logs, It could have been a ddos attack on your domain, but with out seeing what had happened it is hard to say.

My sites at one time was down for about 5 days, and I didn't lose any serps, so I don't think you have to worry about losing serps in one day, but you should get your site back up as soon as possible.

crystak, without giving any details it is not very smart to discuss if some script can consume 25% cpu or not. If course it can, I can make a script that will consume 100% CPU of any server with just 1 request. :) If you have wordpress, check if it is not hacked. Maybe you sell viagra from your blog without knowing it. :)
