Setting the VPS up

    Hi,

I've just bought a VPS server and it came with cPanel. The server uses Virtuozzo to split the system up.

Anyway, the hostname of the server is thinkteen.co.uk, which is what the site will be hosting.

how on earth do I set it up though? I can't create an account as it says the domain is already in use, but without the account, I can't create an FTP account nor its subdomains.

    What do I do?

    Thanks
    Shamil

You can change the hostname to something likes server-name.thinkteen.co.uk. Make sure to check the DNS setting for it in WHM or ssh. Anyway, it seems you don't have any experience in server/vps management. I would suggest you to change to managed VPS, or at least hire someone to setup your vps correctly before touching anything

I am quite new to VPS, and here's how I've done it :)

Ensure that the hostname is something.domain.com or whatever, just not domain.com

In cPanel, create an account for domain.com, then use it as you would for normal account :)

I'm not a total linux newbie, I used to manage a linux server, for hosting at home myself, but then the bandwidth usage went up lol.

@asdf, are you using cPanel/Plesk or any control panel?
@maestria, set up the server fot hosting, it's fine now, apart from apache just broke after the configuration went bust after I lost connection to the server :|

You need to firstly secure the server and configure IP's & DNS.

    Then, start to create accounts.

If you need security help - security scan etc feel free to PM me, im happy to help securing friendly D.P members systems... Don't like seeing people in the same community getting hacked by 14 year old kids sitting at home.

It really depends on what you want to do, on what kind of server. Here are the basic steps
    - configure server name and networking stuff, including IP, netmask, gateway, resolver etc
    - install needed software
    - remove un-used services / software
    - upgrade server software to the latest stable version
    - secure server: many things need to be done in this step
