That will be like getting rid of all the moderators and administrators of DP forums.

It'll definitely make some people happy though.

Right, because the mods are corrupt and they taze and abuse members?

    C'mon man.

Not all cops are bad, and neither are the DP mods.

What's with the good cop bad cop good mod bad mod stuff ?

It was merely a metaphor as to how moderators are essential to keep the unruly and the troublemakers in line. As are cops.

But that's a fallacy. Cops enforce the law, generally, they don't stop crime.

Or do you think there are prescient cops running around, stopping crime before it happens?

If there were no police, crime and lawbreaking would become rampant because those who don't commit crime due to fear of the law/cops will go on a crime spree.
Those with criminal tendencies who keep themselves clean because of crime and punishment might begin doing evil if there is no one to check them.

That's the way i see it.

The death of those in Nagasaki and Hiroshima is nothing compared to the number of lives that could have been lost if the war had dragged on. And do you think the Japanese or Germans would of hesistated for one second to use the bomb against any of the allies if they had it? The Japanese attacked us in our sleep before a formal declaration of war, not the other way around. And why don't you bring up the Bataan Death March, The Rape of Nanking perpetrated by the Japanese or of course the Jewish Holacaust perpetrated by the Germans?

If you really believe in that statement then you should immediately stop using your computer. After all it's American science and industry that's making it possible, whether you're using a Dell, Mac, Windows or even Linux(since the C programming language and Unix operating system were developed at Bell Labs) or using part of the internet backbone that was created by US business. You are right, our capitalist system that people hate so much has made the world so much more prosperous.

Every day, I encounter more and more people who seem to think that man is inherently evil. The amount of self-loathing is stunning.

    Man isn't inherently evil.
But do you not see the hate and the violence and the greed and the spam and the fraud.
Can we stop that by appealing to the innate goodness of man ?

It's good to practice positive thinking but not wishful thinking.

Oh yeah, one more thing about the horror inflicted on the Japanes by the US. How is Japan doing today? Japan is one of the great, free nations of the world and we had a huge hand in that. How many times in history had one country defeated another in such a bloody contest and then afterward helped the country get back on its feet and then leave them a sovereign nation? Had it after happened before?
How many Japanese have benefited since due to our treatment of postwar Japan compared to the numbers that suffered from the bombs. I'd say the beneficiaries far outweigh the other.

Good. Now we can start trying to behave like an enlightened society instead of criminalizing free speech, free thought, free market action etc.

Are we stopping it now? I can tell you right now that I don't murder, rape or steal because I know it is wrong. Going to jail or facing the death penalty doesn't even factor into my decision making process when I try to be a good man.

Are the police and laws all that keep you from killing?

All of these doomsday scenarios. If we don't fight North Vietnam, there will be a domino effect. If we don't invade Iraq, there will be mushroom clouds in major cities. If we don't criminalize marijuana, there will be reefer madness, the pot smokers will rape and murder. If we don't bail out the big banks, the market will suffer, and the little guy might get hurt.

Keep your head down friend. You're doing an excellent job of surrendering liberty to your own fears.

Some of us aren't, they are those who are good - not because of fear or control, but merely because of their will to be good or because of their innate goodness.

But then there are those, who are good merely because of various factors.
    Police, government, reputation etc
