I have a PR 4 travel blog. I am going to start a site with travel wallpapers made from my original photography. Would I be better of with a brand new domain name or a third level domain name under my current domain name? In otherwords, which type would be best: Best-Travel-Wallpaper.com (brand new) BestTravelWallpaper.com (brand new) or TravelWallpaper.URL.com (established URL)
My Dear Friend It will be better to choose a subdomain instead of getting brand new domain. You can easily divert traffic if you create a subdomain. Secondly you can go for folder under main domain but instead if you select subdomain that will be the best as per my experience. I select the TravelWallpaper.URL.com. It's been established, meaning that your pages are easily crawled by spiders.
If you want to focus on your current blog and to make it one of the reputable ones in Travel industry you should not create another travel website. Focus on blog development.
The wallpaper site is just a way for me to leverage my existing content. It shouldn't require a lot of work once it is up and running. My focus is my blog, but this seems like an easy way to promote the blog via search engine traffic (i do a wallpaper once a month and that one post is a lot of my google traffic), as well as monitize the site a bit.
Well it depends what is your focus With sub-domain no additional cost and you can use your exisitng PR of main domain But if you want to get a new website on different IP and get a NEW PR from scractch from new website, you can do that as well
Go with TravelWallpaper.URL.com as it'll be a lot easier to divert the traffic from your established site when compared to setting up brand new domains.
You've just answered your own question. Don't go for the new domain name since you'll have to promote it. A subdomain wouldn't be appropriate here either - especially since search engines don't treat subdomains as separate domains anymore. Just put the images in a new category on your blog (if you're using WordPress 2.5, the new gallery feature will come in VERY handy here) and announce the new addition to your blog. Then once a week (or whenever you want really), just put up a new wallpaper to that category (I suggested the week so you could populate it quickly without making it look spammy to people). Just make sure your images are able to be indexed via the search engines though. The reason why I suggested the new category over a subdomain or domain is because you can continue to keep the focus of your promotion efforts on your blog while also leveraging the existing users fo your blog to a new feature on the blog that they can than use. Smashing Magazine does an outstanding job of this, if you're looking for an example of how it can be successfully pulled off.
