I'm new at this....it seems the more sites/pages you have links with...the better your position in search engines...given specific tag words. Correct?

yes and no. It's more about the quality of the links that you have, than the quantity. In other words, the websites that link to you need to have a high page rank in order to boost your page rank. If you have a bunch of websites with low page rank linking to you, it won't help you. To summarize, the more quality high page rank websites (that are in same niche as your website) you have, the higher your page will rank in the search engines.

I'd like to suggest your link exchange with high rank sites, just google with the keywords your site is using and send emails to those well ranked site for a link exchange, that is a good way for higher rank.Good luck.

You don'rt really have to have lots of links pointing to your site to rank good in Google.

I have websites that I did not build one link for, but still rank high for some keywords

The basic principle behind links goes as follows-

1.) When a site links to you, it is casting a " vote " for you. If it links to you with a particular word as anchor text, it means it is casting a vote for your page with that anchor.

If the links are relevant and obtained from quality sites, they'd obviously have more of an impact.

yes... just to add to the suggestions given above... Link building is the way to go Higher page ranks = Link to high page rank sites.... higher the number of back quality links.... higher the positioning... I think the quality of the content on your site also plays a very very critical role in placing your site in top positions...
